The Human Saga - Body Worlds

BODY WORLDS is an exquisite exhibition that's on tour worldwide and will soon arrive in a town close to you! Be sure to visit it, because you'll get the chance to see the anatomy of the human body in a complete unique way!

All because of one man, Dr Gubther von Hagens, that invented the process of Plastination in 1977, which involves replacing bodily fluids and fat with reactive plastics and then curing the body for rigidity and permanence. The result?

Human and animal bodies that look as though they have been stripped of their skin, exposing the complex network of muscles, tendons and blood vessels underneath. Body Worlds actually shows us the interior of the body in all its beauty and intricate design! You can witness how wonderful and fascinating the body is, and at the same time, how delicate it can be!

This exposition contains hundreds of body samples, donated to science by willing people for the express purpose of educating future generations and has become a major sucess wherever it passes: it has been seen by 25 million people in 45 cities, setting attendence records in museums all over the world!

Did you know that it takes approximately 1,500 hours, or over one year of work, to prepare, plastinate and pose each specimen?

PROCESS OF PLASTINATION

1. Embalming and Anatomical Dissection

First its necessary to pump formalin into the body via the arteries. This compound kills all bacteria and chemically stops the decay of tissue. Then the skin, fatty and connective tissues are removed with dissection tools, for the preparation of the individual anatomical structures.

2. Removal of Body Fat and Water

By placing the sample into a solvent bath of acethone the water and soluble fats are dissolved from the body

3. Forced Impregnation

During this nuclear stage a reactive polymer like silicone rubber, replaces the acetone. For this to work, the specimen must be immersed in a polymer solution and placed in vacuum chamber. The vacuum removes the acetone from the specimen and helps the polymer to enter every last cell.

4. Positioning

The body is now positioned as desired. Every single anatomical structure is properly aligned and fixed with the help of clamps, needles, wires and foam blocks.

5. Curing (Hardening)

To conclude plastination, the specimen is hardened. This can be done with gas, light, or heat, acording with the polymer used.

Here's some examples of what you can see in Body Worlds!

Among the impressive collection of whole body plastinates are a trapezist hanging by her feet - internal organs clearly visible through her opened abdominal cavity, a hurdler frozen in midair or a horizontally-suspended body, devoid of bones and tissue, showing the intricate and complex configuration of blood vessels and arteries.

You also get the chance to look at the body systems in a more individual and detailed way. In instance, you can see a display of the central nervous system that reflects how interconnected it all is, an amazing look at the arteries demonstrating the complexity of the circulatory system or even oil drums that shows how much blood the heart pumps each day!

A section on embryonic development shows life from its very beginnings. It displays the stages of fetal growth, from something resembling a sea monkey at six weeks to a fully-developed, miniature human on the verge of leaving the womb!

Another emphasis of the exhibition is the detrimental effects of cancer, disease or bad habits on the body. A healthy hip joint is juxtaposed next to one with severe arthritis, another with congenital hip dysplasia, and even an artificial hip. Another example, a lung blackened with tar deposits, should be quite disconcerting to the smoking visitors...

Even the animals make their appearance in the expo! One that really attracts attention is an enormous camel with its three stomachs and digestive system exposed through a gaping hole in its side.

So, what are you waiting for?

Visitors of all ages have satisfied their thirst for knowledge concerning the inner workings of the human body and realized how it's beauty is more than skin-deep!

You can too! Stay alert if the news I added below speak of your town! Or check a more detailed info here!

DO YOU THINK CHILDREN SHOULD ATTEND THIS EXHIBIT?

The plastinates have distinct facial expressions and their eyes and genitals are rendered intact. However, there's a very high educacional value in Body Worlds!

  • I would take my children to see it! Knowledge is power!
  • Some things are better off the eyes of children!
  • Other... Please add input in comments!
