Bodybuilding Nutrition Myths
62When it comes to building quality lean muscle on your frame, the foods you put in your mouth are going to account for about 70% of the results you experience.
If you aren't eating properly, you aren't going to build muscle - period. Just like you can't build a house without any bricks, you can't build muscle tissue without amino acids from protein and energy to put these amino acids together from dietary fat and carbohydrates.
The following are three top muscle building myths that some individuals choose to believe without knowing any better. Familiarize yourself with this now so you do know better.
- 1. Eating as much as possible is a smart plan.
While you need to consume enough total calories to get the ball rolling, eating too much is not going to be beneficial. The problem with overconsumption of calories is that you will end up gaining a great deal of fat mass along with the muscle tissue because the body can only process so much muscle at a time.
For example, if you over eat by 500 calories a day and only 200 of these can go towards muscle tissue building, the remaining 300 will be turned to fat. This fat will then take a lot of extra work at the end of your muscle building venture to work off; therefore, it's better to error on the slightly cautious side and only eat as much as necessary for clean weight gain.
- 2. The more protein you eat, the more muscle mass you will gain.
How many times have you seen guys who frequent the gym pounding back protein shake after protein shake? They think that the more protein they can get into the system, the faster they will unleash pounds of new muscle mass.
Unfortunately, this isn't quite the way it works.
The body has a set need for protein each day, which includes things such as keeping your immune system healthy, keeping all the essential processes in the body running, and building and repairing bodily tissues - including muscle.
Once your protein needs have been met, any extra protein will be broken down and turned to fat or used for energy, depending on the overall nutritional state of the body.
- 3. It doesn't really matter what you eat, as long as you eat LOTS.
Finally, the last myth is that quality of food doesn't matter quite as much while you are building muscle in comparison with losing fat. People get stuck in this thought process that when trying to lose weight, you must eat absolutely healthy and when it comes to gaining weight, you can have more freedom.
While you can have more freedom since you are trying to gain weight and it can be hard to get in the necessary calories, you really must still keep health in mind.
If your muscle building diet is going to consist of a lot of foods high in saturated and trans fats along with sugar, while you might be okay in terms of still being able to gain weight, you aren't doing your long-term health any favors.
Just as with a diet plan, try and make your diet healthy as well.
So, make sure you consider these points next time you walk into the kitchen to fix your next muscle-building meal.
