Bogor, Indonesia
73Visitors to Java will all support the claim that Jakarta goes on forever. Indonesia’s sprawling capital has numerous districts and suburbs. The 5 main districts are only the half of it. Many people consider Bogor to be a suburb of Jakarta. Bogor itself is home to around 3 million people. It is located nearly 40 miles from Jakarta in Java’s cool, rainy highlands. As a result, some of Jakarta’s affluent citizens frequent Bogor, especially during the unbearable heat of Jakarta’s summer. Bogor is home to many gardens and colorful markets. If you have already experienced Jakarta’s urban rush, Bogor is a pleasant getaway. Here are some recommended sights and activities:
1. Bogor’s Botanical Gardens are world class. It is actually pleasant to wander around the manicured grounds during Bogor’s typically rainy afternoons. The plants and trees are well labeled. Garden aficionados will appreciate this, as well as the layout of the garden and its history. The garden was originally conceived by Thomas Raffles, the British colonial figure who founded Singapore. There is a greenhouse on the garden ground that houses various species of orchid. Also on the grounds is the summer villa of the president of Indonesia. It is possible to visit, though difficult, as security clearance is required. It usually takes 5 days to get the go ahead. The orchid garden and the other grounds are a sufficient site for an afternoon or even an entire day of sightseeing. 2. Fishing in Bogor’s river is a popular pastime for domestic tourists. Catfish and carp populate the water and make for some exciting fishing. It is possible to eat your catch, so long as you consider whether your stomach will accept tropical freshwater fish. Fishing Valley offers fishing equipment and grills up some of the best and freshest fish dishes in town. 3. Shopping is a favorite pastime in Bogor. Because of the oft-rainy climate, indoor malls like Botani Square are popular. Traditional markets offer a different take on retail. There are definitely more bargains to be had at the markets. It is sometimes interesting to simply take in all the colors and smells. 4. Simply walking around the riverside is a pleasant activity. Local people are friendly and there are plenty of street vendors hawking refreshments of various sorts. Despite it’s rainy climate, Bogor is a pleasant place to visit. The relatively laid back atmosphere is the perfect tonic after spending time in hectic Jakarta.Scenes from Bogor's Botanical Gardens
