Bogota's Carbon Footprint Reduction Makes It a Great Destination

When I tell stories of my travels to Colombia, most people respond with a shock. They automatically think about the stories they've heard about the violence that runs rampant in the country. But very few of them know of Columbia's growth in ecotourism. And Bogota is in the forefront reducing its carbon footprint and making improvements in conditions.

While there is some truth to Colombia's reputation for drug production, kidnapping and other crimes, it is still a country worth visiting to me. I find it sad that many people avoid visiting this beautiful country. The idea of an offbeat area, with open beaches and local communities appeals to me. And the capital Bogota is my favorite destination.

An Overlooked Metropolis

When I found out that Bogota had a population similar to New York City, I thought to myself "not another city filled with annoying traffic, concrete floors, and the random tree or shrubbery". But when I got there, I found a buzzing, metropolitan city eclipsed by the Andes, Guadalupe and Monserrate mountains..

Bogota - Progress Into a Greener City

With the leadership of mayor Enrique Peoalosa, the city have been making progress in many areas.  The former mayor had decided to make the roads more accessible to people and more bicycle friendly by getting rid of automobiles which are constantly parked all over the city's sidewalks.  And that's not all - there are now parks being built, trees being planted, and public transportation becoming more easily accessible.

Not Any More Dangerous Than Our Cities

While Colombia has gotten negative press for the criminal activity there, the truth is that the crime rates are lower than Washington D.C. And unlike other cities, the locals have a very hospitable attitude. Like every other country, Colombia has customs and mannerisms unique to itself. For example, if you meet somebody, they may shake your elbow as greeting. People who are closer greet each other with a peck on the cheek.

Here are a few things to take note of when meeting people:

1. Rather than hola, people greet each other with the word buenas.
2. When parting say, Chao which is pronounced chow.
3. When there is an accidental bump, simply say "Fresco, fresco" to indicate that it's no problem.

One of the simiplist ways to not only enjoy the cultural and the people of the country is to learn the language. Now if you are like me language was not one of my strong subjects in school. Let's say I was lucky that they dropped the pass rate to 45%. And that took me twice to acheive.

That said one of the most memorable vacations I have had is doing

If You Love Shopping, This Is For You

Shopping in Bogota:

If shopping is your thing, then there are tons of jewelry stores, malls and unique shops along the streets of Bogota. I highly recommend check out Galeria Artesanal de Colombia, located in front of the Museo del Oro at Calle 16 No. 5-60.

If you're looking for something unique to bring back from your trip, check out the the Mercado de San Alejo flea market held each Sunday between 9 and 5. It is located at Calle 24 and Carrera 7.

As a final note, be careful when it comes to buying jewelry. Many sellers carry around fakes so you have be sure to know what you're looking for.
