Boldly going where no Star Trek film has gone before
This isn't your father's Star Trek as J.J. Abrams takes the series in a new direction, giving it a edgier, sexier and perhaps new life again. Recently, until this film came out, "Star Trek" was fading into mediocrity with low box office sales of "Star Trek Nemesis" and the rating fiasco on T.V., "Enterprise." J.J. Abrams retells the story of the original series, as he explores the origins of how Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and the rest of his crew came to be. The film centers around Spock (Zachary Quinto) and James Kirk's relationship, as they both come from different worlds, causing a lot of friction between the two as they struggle to get along. However, their friendship and alliance is the only thing that can save the universe, from this menacing new threat. Over the years, "Star Trek" has captured the hearts and imagination with its science-fiction tale of humanity working together, despite our differences, for a positive future. With this new "Star Trek" film, J.J. Abrams carries on that legacy quite well. Plus, the actors even manage to breath life back into some of Star Trek's memorable characters, without having to resort to imitation of the the original cast. "Star Trek" is definitely one of the best origin story films ever made.
As I've stated earlier, J.J. Abrams vision for the new "Star Trek" film was nothing short of amazing. The story heavily revolves around a young rebellious Iowa farm boy, James Kirk, that joins the federation in hopes to find a path in life. During his journey, he meets a young Vulcan named Spock, whom comes from a society of discipline and emotional restraint. Naturally this causes a lot of friction between the two, as they both purely dislike each other. However, when a new menacing threat from the future emerges, their friendship and alliance is the only thing that can save the universe from utter chaos. It's when Abrams' film focuses on Kirk and Spock's relationship, that this movie is at its' best. As it shows their bitter rivalry build up as their differences in ideology collide, leading up to a hostile fight scene between the two. Allowing for the audience to see just how resentful and bitter distrust one another. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto were brilliant in their perspective roles, as they were able to create a chemistry together that felt authentic.
Once Spock sees the tragic loss of someone close to him, he begins to feel emotional and confused in his new found command. It is during this time, the viewer is able to feel a deep sense of empathy for the character, thus allowing for a deeper connection between both Kirk and Spock's character later on, as they both have lost loved ones due to this new threat. Forced to work together, as both men embark on a journey that will forever change the fate of the universe. The cast was simply brilliant in their perspective roles as they fail to disappoint.
Each actor portraying the character's persona and famous dialogue perfectly, for instance "damn it man, I'm a doctor, not a physicist", by Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban). Even Scotties' (Simon Pegg) famous line, "I'm giving it all she's got captain", makes it into the film without the actors having the resort to merely imitating the original cast, as each actor brings their own authentic personality to the characters.
However, that's not to say you won't see a lot of action and special effects used in this film. As the action in the movie can get pretty intense. Especially during the final climatic showdown, between James Kirk, Spock and Captain Nero (Eric Bana). As Nero tries to destroy the Federation out of revenge, its up to Spock and Kirk to stop him. Leading up to one heck of a final action packed intense struggle and space fight scene, that no "Star Trek" film has had before since "Star Trek: First Contact." Or how about the stranded scene, where James Kirk has to fend for his life against an alien monster, will make any viewer jump out of their seat.
Indeed, J.J. Abrams does a great job revitalizing the popular "Star Trek" franchise. Giving the series new life again, as this "Star Trek" film goes where no Trek movie has gone before. Exploring the origins of Captain Kirk and his crew, as they take the series into a bolder, edgier, and unpredictable territory while staying faithful to the heart of the series. The special effects and action sequences easily rival any of this year's films, and the cast was simply brilliant in their perspective roles. Overall, "Star Trek" is definitely one of the best films of 2009.
