Bones 3.7 Review
57Don't Go Back To High School
Bones
FOX Tuesday's at 8 pm EST Episode 3.7 "The Boy in the Time Capsule"Grade: B+
Previously on Bones ....: Angela and Hodgins were searching for her husband to get a divorce. He was found but did not sign the papers. Booth and Brennan start going to therapy in order to stay partners. Zack returned from Iraq.
General Summary: A high school opens a time capsule that has been sealed for 20 years, and find a skeleton inside. Roger Dillon was a brilliant young man who was picked on in high school, and ended up dead. With plenty of red herrings, like drugs, an abusive father and a pregnant cheerleader, Booth and Brennan find out the truth and put the case to rest finally. At the same time, they are having problems of their own since Booth was 'that guy' in high school, and he laughs at an embarrassing story of Brennan's.
What was good: Booth and Brennan, of course. Various references to 'That Guy.' Booth's "embarrassing" stories. Brainy Smurf. The therapist wanting to tell his girlfriend he caught a killer. The therapist in general.
What was bad: Lukewarm feelings.
Comments: I love Bones. It is definitely one of my favorite shows, so why have I been feeling so lukewarm about the show lately? It still has fine acting, and interesting cases, but I just can't feel more than 'meh.' I think it is that, like I mentioned before, it doesn't feel to be going anywhere. These are all stand alone episodes, but they are not addressing things I really would like to hear about. Like what is going on with Brennan's father ... they haven't said a thing about that other than a mention in the first few episodes! Maybe they can't get the actor right now, but they can still talk about it. And what about Angela's husband? Have they just given upon that?
I have obviously enjoyed the growth of their relationship, which is going toward a climax as we can all guess. It's about time too. I know people believe that shows go down hill once the main characters get together, but I disagree. It usually does, but with a fine team of writers, it can be possible to still be a great show with a large romance. Angela and Hodgins are handled well, and I know they are not the main couple, but that still could've hurt both of their characters and it did quite the opposite. Yet I believe too in their burgeoning relationship, it is causing the writers to neglect the other characters. Angela and Hodgins are used, but I miss more of Zack. I definitely miss Hodgins and Zack making mischief. They did one scene last week with them doing an experiment ... but didn't show it until after the experiment was over. I want more of the camaraderie and friendship, as well as the romance. I want it all! Overall I thought the killer of this episode was too easy, although when he started to cry at the end, my heart softened somewhat. I thought overall the episode was a good one, much better than the last, but there is something lacking that I just can't put my finger on.Questions I'm Left With: What is going on with Brennan's dad? Did Angela's husband sign the divorce papers? Why is Zack only background now? How many more weeks before our favorite partner-couple becomes an actual couple? When will there be more crazy horse sex?
