The Organic Suburbanite - An Environmentally Friendly Way to Live the American Dream by Warren Schultz will show you all the many ways you can lead a more organic life. Here I thought that living an organic life was just about the foods you ate. That is honestly what I expected when I borrowed the book from my library. How wrong I was! The food section of The Organic Suburbanite is actually very small compared to the rest of the book.

This is actually a book that is full of ideas on leading a greener life in general. Full of things you can do (need to do really) that will help the environment and your health. Do you think you lead a pretty eco-friendly life? I did. After reading this book though I think I have just scratched the surface of living an eco-friendly life. There are so many areas that I hadn't even thought of.

The Organic Suburbanite is divided into three parts - in the home, outdoors, and the lawn and garden. Part one - The Organic Suburbanite At Home - takes you room by room and gives you ideas on leading a more organic life. The book explains how bad chlorine is for you and the environment and gives you alternatives for it. There are sections on The Green Office and how to control pests at home - without pesticides. There is a small section on shopping and an even smaller section on organic foods. That was disappointing; however the rest of the book is such a wealth of information in other areas that I got over that pretty quickly.

Part two is Around the Suburban Yard. It isn't really about the yard though, but about cars, sidewalks, decks, garages, driveways, entertaining and swimming pools. This section is full of things that I hadn't even thought of. These areas of our homes are some of the worst areas in terms of being full of bad things for us and the environment.

Part three is Suburban Lawns and Gardens. Here Schultz talks about growing your own vegetables and fruits, composting, lawn care, etc. Each section is very brief and I found myself wanting more information than what this book had to offer. This does makes sense as there are hundreds of books written on each topic already.

The Organic Suburbanite is a quick read and while it didn't go in depth very much, it is very worthwhile reading. This book is full of things you can do to live a greener life, it just doesn't always go into how you should do it or give a lot of details. But that is OK; this book is a great starting point for anyone looking to live a little more eco-friendly. Which we should all be doing, because not only is it good for the environment, but it is good for us. The powerful chemicals that we use every day and that are in almost everything we purchase hurt us first and the planet second. So really you should be living greener for yourself. I would definitely recommend this book as it got me thinking on so many levels.
