Book Review: Don't Think of an Elephant
54
I read a lot and plan to share personal reviews. This is not a money making thing, I'll share books I read that suck too, though if it's really bad I probably wont bother finishing it. Anyhow, I think reading is contagious and is sadly neither endemic or pandemic as much as I feel it should be.
For my first book review I would like to share with those readers out there a book called Don't Think of an Elephant by George Lakeoff. I chose this to be the first book I share because it is one of the best politically driven books I have read in a very very long time.
George Lakeoff writes the book very easily to understand for the average reader, even though his credential would imply he is highly educated and experienced. Don't Think of an Elephant is a sort of call to arms for American liberals to use imagery and linguistics in their politics. He breaks down how the usage is extremely helpful and how conservatives have been aggressively using these ideas and tactics since the 1950s. He covers how to frame debates, and take back the dialogue in American politics. He accuses liberals of being diminutive and submissive, ultimately leading to the loss of progressivism.
This book is a very short, very easy read. Moreover, there are so few books out there that are as compelling and life-changing as this one is (at least for us progressive political types). I highly recomend this book to any and all liberal/ progressive/ Democratic people, it will change the way you hear speaches, news, and all the other crap. I've included an Amazon link to the book (if I did it right), but really this isn't about the referals, it's about spreading the love and changing the debate.
