A Book that Hit Close to Home

Ever since I moved to Oregon, I have been interested in joining a knitting club. There was one in Montana that I loved, and I wanted to continue the practice.

The problem is, I am very shy when it comes to talking with people I don't know, and I was dragged to the first club with a friend, so it didn't seem so awkward. So, because of my shyness, I never went to any club meanings in this area for the first 9 months of my residency here.

Because I missed club so much, I decided to read the "Friday Night Knitting Club" to remember the good old days.

The Friday Night Knitting Club, by Kate Jacobs

The book opens in a New York knitting shop called "Walker and Daughter." The "Walker" is Georgia, a 30-something year old woman who opened the sjop 12 years ago when her daughter, Dakota, was born. Though she started out by only making commissioned clothing, she was able to open a yarn store where people could come and buy supplies.

Candidly, one friday evening, several women sat down and began knitting together and sharing tidbits of their lives with one another. Though Georgia realized that she would have to stay open a little longer on Fridays, the group decided to continue on each Friday night.

The book tells the stories of all these young women, their lives and secrets and how they slowly, but surely come together.

What I Took Away From the Book

What I enjoyed most was the different characters. Not everyone who came to club knitted or even believed in knitting, but they believed in themselves and in each other. There were stories about women from every age group, from 12, to a lady in her early seventies, and you get to read about their ambitions, trials and typical things women go through at that time in their lives.

The best part about it to me was that it encouraged me to get up, face my fears on shyness and go to club. Which I did. Last Wednesday. And I will continue to go and share with my new friends my personal knitting story.

A MOVIE???

There are rumors that a movie is in the making, starring Julia Roberts. Though not much more is said about it right now, I will keep this hub updated as we learn more.

Luci, I love you. To substitute for a club you read a book about it? It was a smart move though, as it inspired you to finally go to the club. haha :)

Something struck me here. Believe in knitting? Someday I'd love to know or read about what knitting means to you.
