I first became interested in the case of State of Florida vs. Justin Barber after seeing both a Dateline and 48 Hours episode on the case. Even following those televised documentaries, I was anxious to read To Love, Honor, and Kill by Lee Butcher; which, as it turns out, offered even more details about this highly controversial case.
Justin Barber had been married only three years when he allegedly murdered his wife, April, on a isolated strand of Florida's beaches. Then, after shooting himself in four strategic places that would be wounding but not life threatening, he drove ten miles, passing homes and open businesses along the way, in search of "help" for his wife; whom he had left on the beach because he couldn't carry her to their vehicle. Of course, Barber's story was that his wife's fatal injuries and his superficial ones were the work of an unidentified attacker they met on the beach.
What followed was an interesting three year investigation by police as they built a case against Justin Barber for the death of April. The case would consist of evidence that proved Barber's multiple affairs during his short marriage, apparent motive with the collection of high dollar life insurance policies, and a strange obsession by Barber to never be divorced because of his family's religious beliefs and the appearance of such in his fast-paced climb up the corporate ladder.
Yet, all the circumstancial evidence was just that: circumstancial. What about forensics? None would link Barber to the crime.
Was he truly a victim or was he an intelligent man who would get away with murder?
In To Love, Honor, and Kill, author Lee Butcher lays out all the details of the investigation, the circumstancial evidence against Barber and the results of foresnic testing for reader to make their own decision. While the jury has already decided Justin Barber's fate, true crime genre fans will enjoy debating whether Barber is a victim or cold blooded killer.
