Autobiography of my dead brother

By: Walter Dean Myers

Rise and Jesse were best friends who soon became blood brothers, when Jesse got hurt on a swing.  Rise ran into his Kitchen and cut himself and put his blood against Jesse’s bleeding arm.  Even though Rise and Jesse were a few years apart they still acted like they were brothers.  Jesse always was hanging with Rise since they met.  The joined a community group called “The Counts”.  Anything that was happening in either one of their lives they both spoke their minds to each other no matter the cost.

Years later Rise began to become a stranger to Jesse.  Rise began to listen to different music, change his look, and hardly talked to Jesse.  This began to frighten Jesse; he was scared that his childhood friend might be getting into trouble.  Jesse’s blood brother had vanished but has left behind an unknown person.  Rise was getting involved with gangs and stuff while Jesse was getting involved with his art.  Jesse wanted to talked to Rise and tell him that he wasn’t the person he grew up with anymore; it was like he was ignoring him.

As the time goes by Jesse calls Rise asks him if they could hangout just like old times.  Rise tells Jesse that he was going to start getting into a gang, when Jesse stopped him and reminded him of what he has said about getting into gangs and drugs was the stupidest thing a person could possibly do.  Rise was listening to Jesse and told him that he wants to make a change in his life. Then he asked Jesse to write his autobiography and Jesse had said yes.  After all he did remember more about there childhood then Rise had.  This was when rise told Jesse he was planning to move to New York and try to get a job along with joining a gang.  The days had passed and The Counts had a meeting.  They were interviewing a new interested kid they called “Little Man.”

They rejected him at once and Little Man got into a gang called “The Diablos”.  Jesse was going out to tell Rise that only Rise could finish his biography himself because Jesse couldn’t leave his home and follow Rise all the way to New York.  Rise pulled up to Say goodbye when Little Man showed up and shot Rise because he was rejected from joining The Counts.  At this point Little Man had gotten away only enough to get caught on the roof of his parents’ house.  Jesse ran to his blood brother held him close and cried just as much as rise had.  With the last bit of energy rise said to Jesse: “I am sorry for the pain I have caused...Jessssssssse”.  It was at this point that Jesse had promised Rise that he would finish the autobiography and publish it in honor of his blood brother Rise.
