Books That Impacted My Journey to Better Health
69My feelings about Western Medicine are no secret. The last 6 years or so, I found that I had to do an awful lot of legwork myself regarding health, and preparing for doctors appointments. But then, like I’ve said to hundreds of my own clients: Your health is your responsibility. Who should be more interested in your health than you? Doctors are busy people. They are not going to be as motivated to spend hours on the internet or in a book researching your symptoms.
Consequently, I have amassed a small library of books on various diagnoses and clinical topics. In this hub I share the first of what will likely be many sets of my favorite books.
Sinus Survival

Sinus Survival: The Holistic Medical Treatment for Allergies, Colds, and Sinusitis
Price: $6.49
List Price: $15.95 |
Favorite book #1: Sinus Survival: The Holistic Medical Treatment for Allergies, Colds, and Sinusitis (Paperback), by Dr. Robert S. Ivker.
This book gave me my life back the first time Western Medicine failed me. I had suffered chronic sinus infections for over 6 years. In addition to countless rounds of medicines including antibiotics, I had 2 surgeries. Nothing helped. After stumbling on Dr. Ivker’s book, I began his vitamin and supplement recommendations outlined in his book. Recommendations are given for adults, pregnant women and children. The book also has other recommendations such as for nasal saline washes, air purifiers, and dietary suggestions. He also discusses candida, an adverse effect of the overuse of antibiotics on the body. Dr. Ivker’s programs have been highly successful. Testimonials describe not only relief of sinus conditions, but a positive impact on clients’ other health problems such as blood pressure.

Favorite Book #2: Are You Sick of Being Sick, by Dr. Kurt A. Barrett.
This book educated me about laryngotracheal or extra-esophageal reflux the second time Western Medicine failed me. Dr. Barrett is a family practice physician who could not help his own daughters. They had uncontrolled allergies and suffered horribly for years. Dr. Barrett came to realize that it was not allergies, but reflux that was the cause of their allergy-like symptoms. The over-production of mucus is a protective response to the excess acid production in the stomach. As the acids creep up the esophagus and near the trachea, the body produces mucus to attempt a barrier. This explains why typical allergy treatments do not work. He estimates as many as 50% of reflux suffers do not have stomach or gastrointestinal symptoms. His book outlines physical exam findings that he has come to recognize, such as a particular appearance of the uvula, the ear drum and the nasal turbinates.
Help for Hypothyroidism

Living Well with Hypothyroidism: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You... That You Need to Know (Revised Edition)
Price: $9.23
List Price: $15.99 |
Favorite book #3: Living Well with Hypothyroidism: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You... That You Need to Know (Revised Edition) by
Mary Shoman has Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue syndrome. Through her experience with the medical system, she has become a patient advocate and author in all of these issues. This book was a lifesaver the third time Western Medicine failed me. I have this book tabbed and highlighted like some people do their Bible. She has not only exhaustive information on thyroid disease, but abundant resources on both Western Medicine and alternative medicine resources. She also includes online resources, such as one of my absolute favorites, Dr. Bruce Rind.
Body Ecology Plan
|
The Body Ecology Diet: Recovering Your Health and Rebuilding Your Immunity
Price: $17.59
List Price: $24.95 |
Favorite book #4: The Body Ecology Diet: Recovering Your Health and Rebuilding Your Immunity, 9th edition, by Donna Gates and Linda Schatz.
This book is directed to those with an array of health problems including digestive problems, cancer, Alzheimer’s, ADD and Multiple Sclerosis. It combines and builds on many other diets, including the food combining and blood type diets. The eating plan is designed to optimize the pH of the body, making it a less hospitable environment for diseases, including cancer. Combining meat protein and starches in the same meal is highly discouraged because the digestive processes are too diverse, therefore together they are too difficult to digest. Fermented, or cultured foods like cultured vegetables and kefir, are highly encouraged. Recipes are included for recommended foods. Visit The Body Ecology Website.
Natural Healing
|
A Woman's Complete Guide to Natural Health (Avery Health Guides)
I bought a like-new copy for $0.01 + $3.99 shipping.
Price: $4.86
List Price: $19.95 |
Favorite book #5: A Woman's Complete Guide to Natural Health (Avery Health Guides) by
This book is very easy to read. It does a great job of simply explaining the essence of natural healing and the departure from Western Medicine. Western Medicine identifies symptoms and treats them with prescription medications. Natural or alternative medicine looks on symptoms as important clues to imbalances in the body. These imbalances are thought to be caused by toxins in the environment including foods, and cause harmful free radicals. The book has short sections on numerous common health conditions, from headaches, high blood pressure and high cholesterol to lupus, Multiple Sclerosis and cancer. Western Medicine treatment is discussed, as well as natural cures. Lot to be learned here, for men or women.
101 Health Tips

101 Great Ways to Improve Your Health
When I took this book to work with me, it passed around for about a week and I had to retrieve it. People were reading to each other from it.
Price: $8.50
List Price: $14.95 |
Favorite book #6: 101 Great Ways to Improve Your Health, Selected and introduced by David Riklan and Dr. Joseph Cilea.
I’d say the book is biased toward Alternative Medicine principles and techniques, in diverse areas. Topics are divided into 9 strategy areas: Self Improvement, Nutrition, Energy Techniques, Fitness, Hidden Health Dangers, Holistic Health, Physical and Mental Problems, Stress, and Nutritional Supplements. Each of the 101 topics are only 2 to 4 pages. Ideal to keep on the bedside table.
Hormone Questions
|
Hormone Heresy : What Women Must Know About Their Hormones
Price: $9.60
List Price: $18.95 |
Favorite book #7: Hormone Heresy : What Women Must Know About Their Hormones, by Sherrill Sellman.
I decided to buy this book after reading an interview with Ms. Sellman by Mary Shoman. The author talks about myths and misconceptions of women’s hormones propagated by physicians and pharmaceutical companies. Her logical presentation clicked with me. She relies highly on the work of Dr. John R. Lee’s work. Neither Ms. Sellman nor Dr. Lee recommend hormone replacement therapy nor expensive osteoporosis treatments, but instead natural progesterone cream. Dr. Lee’s work is pretty compelling in noting the use of progesterone in helping directly or indirectly with cholesterol levels, blood pressure and an array of health problems.

Thanks for your support lyricsingray!
Wow, #6 and it is a good one. Great idea for a hub as well!
Thanks Money. I'm glad you say that because I have plans for book review hubs on my most recommended books for patients, and my favorite food/nutrition books.
Well done rmcrayne, 6 hubs in 7 days for the Health Care Hubmob is an achievement.
The books reviewed look interesting. It is amazing how much one can learn about health issues if one chooses to read and learn about what is troubling you. It is a great shame that some doctors cannot take the time off work to read about new developments and cures.
Thanks for your support Princessa. Health/Healthcare is my passion topic.
It's great to have books and internet resources, but can be really overwhelming to have so much information when you're looking for answers. Unfortunately too often doctors refuse to read or listen to patients’ “anecdotal evidence”, thereby limiting what they offer clients.
Some of these look interesting, others wouldn't be very useful to me because they're on conditions I don't have. I don't actually prepare my own food but my daughter is a good nutritionist and has adapted what she knows of both cooking (pastry chef, savory cook both at professional level) with a lifetime interest in herbalism and nutrition with her pharmacy tech experience -- and the one thing that makes her cooking so powerful and effective at "stealth nutrition" is that she watches the real results.
A lot of times diets and plans that are great in general turn out to be horribly wrong for me. Sometimes foods that are bad for people turn out to be essential or if I avoid them I'm just not functioning as well, but if I have them regularly I start thriving and having more strength. Kitten has brought in a lot of the trace nutrients that I'd tried to get out of certain junk foods -- and reached a point where the home cooked goodies are actually tastier than the junk food.
I was eating to my body needs for about a decade anyway but with her cooking it's had profound effects on every aspect of my life. The main thing I learned is that it's idiosyncratic -- it's trial and error starting from ideas and principles of nutrition to what actually works for the individual.
Wow! This is a great list. You sure know your "stuff". Also wanted to mention that you're really off to a roaring start here at HP - keep up the good work!
Robert, What a gift you have in Kitten, but I’m sure you know that. You’re so right about trial and error. Unfortunately most of us haven’t successfully honed the ability to truly listen to our bodies. I’m very lucky to have found a Naturopath who has practiced 40 years and is also an herbalist, homeopath and nutritionist.
Aqua, thanks for the compliments and for your support. I am extremely proud of and motivated by my HubPages experience.
Another great one, Rose Mary. Do you also write cliff notes for all of these? In so many of these type books, I get lost in the lingo...Don't sleep--write some more!!!
Thanks Christy. I used to drive myself crazy reading and digging for info. It was overwhelming, but I no longer feel desperate since I found my Naturopath. I have turned it over to him and have complete confidence he hears me and knows what to do, long term and short term.
What a great list. Some new ones for me, thanks!
Thanks for stopping by RTalloni.
