Boots have been designed for so many different types of sports, including riding, skiing, snowboarding, skating, and sports. Singer Nancy Sinatra was noted as responsible for popularizing the fad of women wearing boot's in the late 60s.
Boot and shoemakers are commonly called "cobblers." But the word cobbler is more properly applied to men who repaire shoes. Those who actually make footwear are known as "cordwainers." This term has its antecedents in the word "cordovan" which was a reddy leather produced in Spain. Hence, someone who worked in cordovan was a cordwainer.
The oldest footwear in the world is a sandal which was found in a cave in Missouri USA, which was made around 8,000 years ago.
