Cebu is popular for the Sinulog festival. Sinulog is an annual event held on the third Sunday of January. The festival is marked by street parades with participants, wearing elaborate, bright-colored costumes, dancing to the rhythm of drums, trumpets, and native songs. The festival honors the child Jesus, known as the Santo Niño, patron of the city of Cebu.

Cebu was the host city for the 12th ASEAN Summit in 2006.
