Jack Daniels is not Bourbon Whiskey

I can't tell you how many times I've been in restaurants or bars, both here in NJ and down south, where someone comes in and asks for Bourbon.   They take a sip and sent it back.. they meant Jack Daniels... But dear readers, Jack Daniels is not Bourbon, never was, never will be.  Jack Daniels is Tennessee Sippin' Whiskey.  Most of it is served with 7up or ginger ale.   Gentleman Jack is aged in old oak used to make Scotch Whiskey-no Bourbon oak there either.

I know many a Kentucky resident who would RUE THE DAY that their spirit was compared in ANY way with Tennessee Sippin' Whiskey. Only since prohibition is Bourbon made with Corn.  Prior, it was made with RYE.   Similar in flavor to Canadian Whiskey in that respect.  Sweet, primal and powerful... not smoked over burning wood.  There is a difference!

Common mistake,I guess. I always thought JD was bourbon, although never drank it myself.

Would be helpful to include some typical brands that ARE bourbon.

Pretty sure my fave -- Jim Beam -- qualifies. Yes?

Jim Beam is a pretty good national brand. I call attention to Bourbon such as Pappy Van Winkle, Woodford Reserve amongst several others... They are not inexpensive as Jim Beam and offer a much truer (to my palate) representation of the craft. good point!

Elijah Craig,, Knob Creek , Makers Mark,, Evan williams.

to name a few. all of which are a step (or more ) up from Jim Beam. though i always seem to have a bit of Wild Turkey 101 handy ... ;)
