Not long ago, being found gay could end your career, nowadays, it might enhance it.

But they're celebrities! Yawn!!

Same sex snogging seems to be spreading.

Am I alone in feeling distaste, to use restraint, for all this gay celebrity attention? We have just got over all the hoo-ha over Michael Jackson, who many think was a homosexual paedophile, who spent millions of dollars sweeping his attentions to male minors under the carpet; the news channels devoting thousands of hours world-wide to the story. Now we have the shocking and sudden death of Stephen Gately, another avowed homosexual, to contend with It seems certain facts of the singer’s death have been hushed up: he appears to have suffered a heart attack, but he was smoking pot at the very least the night before, and he and his partner, Andy Cowles, had invited a rather shadowy figure to their apartment, a Bulgarian waiter name of George Dochev, who had stayed the night and, indeed, “discovered” Gately’s corpse “on his way out.“ The question everyone will be asking themselves, if not out loud is, “If alcohol and hard drugs were not involved, did sexual excitement, a la ménage a trois, contribute to the singer’s death by over-straining an already weak heart?” (In fact, this seems to be the case, as the visitor revealed to Spanish police - who have reopened the investigation as of October 25 - that he did engage in sexual acts with the partners, and that Gately was pretty drunk).

Gays don’t come reluctantly out of the “closet” these days, they trumpet their "sexual preference" from the roof-tops. I am especially offended by the hobbyist, self-confessed bi-sexuals, like Kate Moss and Angelina Jolie, to name but two. What are these hemales at - if you’ll excuse the pun - bottom? What do their kids talk about at school when mum is seen leaving a night club, arm-in-arm, or tongue deep down the throat of some drunken companion, “Oh, that’s auntie Miriam?” In fact, what sort of kids are these mothers raising? If it’s alright for mum and dad to cross-dress and have same-sex lovers, or mum and “dad” to be both female or male, surely the kids will grow up wanting the same perceived "normaility?"

Same sex kissing seems to have spread like an ugly rash among youngsters, especially women, when they have had too much to drink during a night out. Are they just lonely and starved for contact? And we are treated to homosexuals kissing on soaps like Eastenders, despite the protests from hundreds of viewers. So what you say? Is that the problem, we now have a “so what” society where anything goes and damn the long term consequences?

I wouldn’t mind if the homosexual lifestyle wasn’t all too often reported as being full of violence, drug use, infidelity and diseases such as AIDS, herpes and the rest. For every homosexual relationship that does seem to have the solidarity of many heterosexual marriages, such as that of Furness and John, as far as we know; there are a hundred that have none of the traditional values we have grown to expect from a good “normal” marriage.

I was fascinated to see the messages of condolence arriving in Ireland for today’s burying. All our precious celebs had to have their names in the limelight, the facet of life they must yearn-for daily: the Beckhams were prominent, Victoria never misses a sound-bite opportunity. This insecure women will soon resemble a skull if she looses any more weight; it’s obvious the brain has already shrunk to the size of a pea; does she dabble with other women? Does handsome David drop his gaze - or more - in the locker room? Dunno, wouldn‘t surprise me. Elton sent his “wife,” Furness, The slimy Simon Cowell, who I could see cosying-up to a gay rabid rat if there was money in it, (OK, I exaggerate, just don’t like him) sent his condolences; so did Robbie Williams, Cheryl Cole, George Michael, Sharon Osborn, Brian McFadden and heaps more; the messages were still pouring in on Saturday morning.

How many remember the following also died this year, 2009? They all got some news coverage, but nothing like that surrounding Michael Jackson or Stephen Blakely, neither did, as far as I know, our celebs en masse send messages of comfort to their families. Why??

Ronnie Biggs (OK, not many missed him, but…)

Karl Malden Great actor in more than 100 movies

Patrick Swayze Likewise

Wendy Richard Eastender’s star

Walter Kronkite Greatest media journalist ever

Bobby Robson Soccer

Edward Kennedy US politician

Dai Llewellyn Famous Welshman

OK, they all got some coverage, and so they should. Not one known gay among them and I bet the limited coverage (apart from Swayze) all forgotten by readers who are still blubbing over Jackson. Of course these people are talented if they are your cup of tea: Michael was a great dancer/singer/showman; Gately seemed a nice chap (or, as we said in the navy, “chasp.”), and he had a lovely voice. But is his passing, which doesn’t seem to contain some great mystery, enough to get this minor celebrity news coverage on BBC and Sky all bloody day? Of course not, it’s the fact of the attention of all the gay and other celebrities attending or sending condolences. That’s where the news value is. The whole thing is just a big yawn to most people, I am sure.

In closing, I would like to mention the word “homophobic.” It seems non PC these days to possess homophobia, which the dictionary says is not hatred of, nor aggression to, homosexuals, as our police seem to suggest, but an “Irrational fear…of homosexuality.” Chew that over for a while and come up with your own conclusion. My own standpoint is I don’t fear anyone not like me, don’t hate them - I’m no gay basher - but just can’t be bothered with gays and am tired of hearing about them and their sexual preferences, defending their life-style, yadder, yadder, yadder. It will be a sad day when we need them to re-populate the world after, say, a nuclear Armageddon kills 99% of the planet’s citizens.

So long, guys, my fire has died down, have to throw a couple of faggots on it. (“Faggot,” dictionary definition: “bundle of sticks or wood used to make a fire“ “Gay,” apart from the obvious, “a person or happening that is light-hearted and merry“).

Bye X

PS I see Google has already attached dozens of homosexual-oriented advertisements to this article. Catering for gays is a huge business in 2009.

Logical comment, please; not hate-filled, even if you don’t agree. Cheers.

Oh Bob! You've excelled yourself here! I hardly dare comment, except to say that free speech is clearly a gift to you, and that we're all entitled to our opinions. Now if you do a similar hub about Irish Catholic priests, you'll be on a roll!

I knew you'd weigh-in with something, Amanda. To be honest, I could care less about the subject, I was just bored and needed attention! nasty little (290 pound) chappie. Now you do one on why women LIKE chubby men. He he Bob x

Why Irish Catholic Priests??

Well I've heard more tales about priests and choirboys than I've heard about poor old Michael Jackson. Personally I think he was possibly innocent, but badly advised. I guess we'll never know the truth for sure.

Who knows, Amanda, who knows, inoocent is as innocent does. I just hate freaks like that with so much vanity they spend millions altering their appearance, unless they are crippled or disfigured, but he was a handsome kid before all that. It's easy to put on a front, too, isn't it, especially when the penalty is 20 years hard time for paedophilia. Oh, I see, yeah, they're all gay those priests, that's why they join. Bloodsuckers (etc!) Bob

Maybe Cliff has not admitted being gay because he is not gay. He has said in the past he is NOT gay.

diogenes  says:

Maybe he isn't, though if there were any way of proving it one way or another, my money would say he is. In fact, we see lately he does have a male companion. He is of the old school, who don't want their lives exposed fr all to pull apart and I admire him for that.

Thanks for your comment.

I am surprised you haven't received more negative comments here. But how refreshing.

I have always believed in "live and let live" and yet there has been so much "Gay" promotion, that in some circles it is not only antiquated to be heterosexual (what's all this rubbish about "straight" and even "gay" - I remember when gay meant being being happy, and that is not I word I easily associate with homosexuals) you actually end up on the receiving end of aggression.

In this day and age most of us will have friends or relatives that are homosexual ... So? There is no need to make an issue out of it.

Unless of course somebody is trying to convince him or herself of something ...

Clearly, your exposure to the lives of gay persons has been (to put it charitably) somewhat limited. I am openly gay, and lead a very "ordinary" lifestyle, in which my primary concerns pertain to my career, my family members, and my friends.

As for the problem you have watching same-sex kissing; I certainly do not complain when I watch two straight people kissing, and I fail utterly to understand why you find the sight of two gay people kissing so personally offensive.

YOU used the word "homophobia". I stress, again -- YOU used that word, not me! Did it occur to you that the disease, drug usage, and violence you impute to the "homosexual lifestyle" may in fact be relevant only to a small segment of the gay population?

Or should I assume that all heterosexual women behave like Amy Winehouse?

I don't agree with you, but I defend your right to say what you like. Straight is ordinary, and so is gay, and so is half and half, in my view. The fuss is made by the media, and they know there are still enough people who are confronted enough to distinguish between preferences. So the market's there, and you have proved it. The fuss about Michael Jackson above other celebrity deaths is that the media knows there is a market there.

And we know what kind of market: the advertising dollar. It is the most powerful dollar, and makes the financial world go round.

None of us would be here writing and reading this stuff if it were not for the advertising dollar.

Interesting hub.

You know, JR, I wonder if anything is really important, if you dig down through the levels enough. It takes so many brush-strokes to paint the canvas of a life; we seem to journey too far away from the basics in life. So I have to agree, the media makes something out of...perhaps nothing is right. And, yes, its the money, plus satisfying the ego that keeps us scribbling, it'll all be forgotten real soon. Bob.
