Brain Boosting Foods for Children
56
Just like adults need food for their noggin, children also require essential foods to nurture their growing minds. Try to remember the next time you are making breakfast, packing lunch or preparing dinner for your family to incorporate some of these foods to cultivate your child's mind.
Eggs: Eggs are an excellent source of protein but are also rich in Choline, an essential nutrient found in eggs and vital for creation of memory stem cells. Eggs don't have to be just scrambled boiled or over easy. For children who despise eggs try French toast or muffins. (USDA recommends avoiding egg whites until 1 year of age and age yolks at least 8 months).
Oatmeal: Research shows because oatmeal is a great source of fiber and digests slowly, it provide children with not only a good amount of protein, but a steady stream of energy, necessary for a brain boost.
Flaxseed anyone: Not just for grownups anymore flaxseed can be easily disguised in a smoothie, in muffin mix, or pancake batter. Rich in omega-3; a good source of brain power.
Does a body good: Yes milk helps maintain strong bones and healthy teeth for your child but the calcium is also good for regulating energy. Try low-fat dairy products like yogurt and cheese.
Berry indulgence: Eating strawberries and blueberries has been linked to better coordination, short-term memory and concentration.
Dried Fruits: Try dried fruits with minimal sugars added for a quick snack to add to their lunches. A trail mix with dried cherries and cranberries can offer a good source of iron which helps increase mental alertness and energy levels.
Ditch the white bread: When you are loading up on whole grains for energy and fiber, remember your child. Replace all Wonder bread and the like with 100% whole grain bread to nurture you child's mind.
Salmon: Your children may not have the same taste as you and may pass on the sesame encrusted salmon steak you prepared for dinner. Make them salmon salad or tuna so they can too enjoy the benefits of omega-3's brain boosting power.
Keep things fruity: Antioxidants are plentiful in fruits. Prepare a fruit platter in bite size pieces for small hands to enjoy for after school snacks and lunch-time treats. A veggie tray will do the trick as well with broccoli, and celery, rich in essential brain building nutrients.
