The thought that you could lose your memory is frightening to many people. Unfortunately, this very thing happens to many people around our world every day. Alzheimer's disease and other dementia causing diseases steal the memories of thousands of people on a daily basis. They may forget past events, family members and even how to meet their own basic needs. The good news is that there may be some dietary changes that you can use to prevent memory loss.
There is still much unknown about Alzheimer's disease, however, we already know that when plaque builds up in the brain it is an important part of the beginning of the disease. Once the plaque begins to build up, it can destroy brain cells.
One way that you can clear brain plaque it to increase the antioxidants you eat. Not only do they remove plaque, they also encourage the formation of new brain cells and help existing cells to communicate, thereby helping to improve brain memory.
The antioxidants that are needed are found in many of the brightly colored fruits and vegetables. It is believed that eating these foods can lower the amount of plaque that is found in the human brain. Purple fruits are some of the best of the antioxidants. They include cranberries, concord grapes and blueberries. These foods reduce brain plaque and help to prevent memory loss.
In addition, you may want to increase your consumption of foods including yellow curry and foods rich in the B vitamins such as folic acid and niacin. Some of those foods include fish and other lean meats as well as legumes. Many other foods are rich in the B vitamins so be sure that you get plenty of these nutrients for an improved memory.
While it is possible to get these nutrients in a supplement, most of the researchers feel that people need to eat the real food to get the most benefit. Simply add these foods to the diet to increase your brain power and lower your risk of disease. If you increase the foods in your diet, you should not need the supplements. In addition, it will encourage you to eat healthier foods.
In addition to being good for your brain most of these foods are also good for your heart. One thing that you will want to do for both your brain and your heart is to lower the amount of trans fats you consume. Excess cholesterol is not good for your brain or your heart. Limit you consumption of these high calorie foods.
While cholesterol functions to protect your nerves, an excess of cholesterol in the brain can be a precursor to developing dementia. Do yourself a favor and lower your cholesterol level in order to prevent memory loss.
