The brain can heal after abuse and trauma: Brain Plasticity
75
The brain can transfigure itself after effects of abuse and trauma. For more about the effects of abuse and trauma, see my article, "The effects of abuse." The brain's ability to transform is a wonderful thing. The transformation is a part of the healing process. The beauty of this phenomenon is that we do have the power to heal ourselves. Usually the healing that is referred to in self-help books and in therapy is the kind of healing that allows individuals to feel at peace, content, serene. These feelings are very important, although the good news is that the brain can actually physically heal itself.
One can relearn what was learned from trauma and crisis by reprogramming the brain. This takes effort. This is the focus of much post-traumatic stress disorder treatment, as well as other mental health treatments. This path is a lifelong journey of relearning, for example, social signals and self worth. What one person may need to relearn will be completely different than another individual.
There are many treatments that will help maximize the brain's ability to heal. Medication is available and mental health treatment can offer an individual a place to sort through what they have learned. Relaxation techniques are very beneficial to individuals who wish to improve their ability to heal. Current stressful situations that can be avoided should. A support system of people who care and love is extremely important. More about Brain plasticity
