The person may seem restless, aggitated or irritable. The most common causes of contusion include a blow to the head from a motor vehicle crash, fall or assault To fully understand what a cerebral contusion is, one must first understand how it can happen.

A contusion which is directly beneath the spot of where the impact occurs when the brain rebounds against the skull from the force of a blow or a beating with a blunt instrument. So when the force of a blow drives the brain against the opposite side of the skull, or when the head is hurled forward and stopped abruptly. Causes of Brain Damage

A contusion which is a bruise of the brain tissue can happen to anyone, at any time. Some of the most common causes of multiple microhemorrhages of small blood vessel leaking into the brain tissue are a blow to the head from a motor vehicle crash, fall or assault.

Contusions typically form in a wedge-shape with the widest part in the outermost part of the brain. If the bleeding is extensive the contusion will lead to hematoma which is a collection of blood, hematoma can lead to permanent brain damage or death.
