If your home is anything like mine, the entire family congregates their for at least half of the evening. When friends are over, everyone sits in the kitchen and talks and drinks coffee for hours. In order to get extra room for eating spaces, and work-spaces, in the kitchen, to accommodate everyone who wants to spend time there, the best option, we decided, was to buy a breakfast bar. If more than one person is occupying the table, this is the extra space and function, that's needed in order to do other things. There was of course the option of a building a bar ourselves, but then we wouldn't have features and functionality of a bar we could move conveniently.

A breakfast bar table can fulfill a number of functions in the kitchen. For example,  extra workspace for chopping food, a place to set a TV to watch while preparing food, or any number of other purposes which provide the extra space that most kitchens need. When shopping for a one, try to keep in mind the specific needs of your kitchen as well as it's design.

As one of the most used room in the house, the kitchen can be the focal point of many households. When a family spends a lot of time in one room, it tends to become a place for many different functions. Kids do their homework at the table, parents prepare dinner, perhaps you eat dinner in your kitchen, instead of a dining room. While these are typical functions, today a family has even more things they do in a kitchen and requires more space to do those things. Along with the things families do in a kitchen, there are many appliances which families use in the kitchen, today, in which they didn't use 50 years ago. It's important to sit down and list the functions you expect a new breakfast bar to hold in your home. If you're choosing a portable breakfast bar, then perhaps you have more than one room to coordinate colors, styles and designs. What functions will the new bar serve? Should it be for entertaining? Making extra space to serve? An extra counter top to work on? Who will be using it; kids, adults or everyone?

Breakfast bars for your kitchen come in many different styles and sizes. Some styles can even act as different types of kitchen furniture. For instance a portable breakfast bar can act as an alcohol bar or a cart. Setting up the bar near the serving area for dinner, and you can have extra space on the dining table, but the keep the food nearby. This is a great way to make room when you're having a dinner party as well. But, the same bar you would bring out for guests may not be the best type for extra tasks in the kitchen, like chopping or kids doing homework.

When shopping for the bar, check the dimensions first. Be sure it will fit appropriately and comfortably in your home, whether it will be stored out of the way or set prominently in the kitchen or dining room.. If the bar doesn't save you space and gets in the way, its not a convenient purchase.

Chose a counter top that has lots of versatility. Wood can be painted, but if you want the look and feel of natural wood, then you will probably not want a breakfast bar that is multi-functional. A bar which has only certain functions can certainly still be an asset to a household. If cared for, a natural wood bar will be able to withstand some abuse. A marble top may be heavier, but will serve many functions. Marble is easy to clean and heavier duty marbles can withstand a lot of abuse.
