Breakfasts For Kids on the Go

The Importance of Breakfast
I think we all know how important it is to feed your body after fasting overnight. It has been proven time and time again that children who eat a balanced breakfast do better in school. Nothing effects the scores on a math test more than low blood sugar!
The trouble is getting your kids to sit still long enough to eat first thing in the morning. For most families the morning rush is overwhelming and just getting everyone up and out the door on time is a challenge. With a little planning your kids will be out the door with a nutritious start to their day. Here are my ideas for breakfasts your kids can grab on the fly and either eat on their way to school or prepare quickly before heading off to school.

Tips for Making Mornings Easier
- Plan ahead. A little preparation during the weekend or evening can ensure that school mornings are as smooth as, well, a smoothie.
- If you make pancakes or french toast on the weekend make a double batch and put the leftovers in your freezer in individual portions in ziplock bags. Now they are toaster ready during the week.
- No one said breakfast had to be breakfast food! A slice of cold pizza or a chicken salad sandwhich is just as nutritional for breakfast as it is for lunch and your kids may enjoy it more and actually eat it!
- Put a "Brain dead" list on the fridge of things inside that would be a good choice for a snack or breakfast. That way the kids can get a hint on what to grab if they don't know what they want when they are hungry.
- Always keep fresh fruit and vegetables washed and ready to eat or make up a huge bowl of fruit salad that they can just dish up in a hurry.
- Always keep BTG (breakfast to go) packs on hand and ready. I have some recipes and ideas below.
BTG Packs
Get a big cookie jar or container that you can keep on the countertop or the table and fill it with BTG packs. These are individual bags that can be eaten on the fly. If you or the kids are running late they can grab a bag along with a box or thermos of milk and eat them on the way to school. Trust me...they are life savers!
BTG Packs:
Each pack contains
- 1/4 cup of nuts
- 1/4 cup of dried fruit (raisins, dates, apricots..whatever your kids like)
- 1/2 cup dry cereal (Shreddies, Cherios, Puffed Wheat or Granola work well)
Place this in a zip lock bag and store in cookie jar.
Banana Dog
A favorite with kids!
INGREDIENTS:
Whole-grain hot dog bun
Peanut butter
Wheat germ or sunflower seeds
Banana
Jam
1. Simply spread a whole-grain hot dog bun with peanut butter, sprinkle with wheat germ or sunflower seeds, and top with a whole, peeled banana and a squiggle of jam. Add a side of milk to round out the meal.
Variation: For a Banana Burrito, substitute a tortilla for the bun.
Berry Banana Thick Shake
Your kids will go bananas over this fruity concoction.
INGREDIENTS:
2 bananas
5 to 10 strawberries
1/4 cup blueberries
1/2 cup milk
1. Peel the bananas, slice them into 1 inch chunks, and place in a sealable plastic bag. Wash and stem the strawberries and blueberries and place them in the bag, too. Seal the bag and freeze for three hours. (Should be done when you bring groceries home so they are ready anytime you need them)
2. Place the frozen fruits in a blender or the bowl of a food processor (if they are frozen too solid, let them slightly defrost). Add the milk and puree or process until the mixture is smooth and thick. Pour into a bowl or mug and serve immediately with spoons. Makes 2 thick shakes.
Kauai Smoothie
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups ice
1 cup strawberry yogurt
1 medium banana
1 cup guava or tropical fruit juice
1/2 cup orange juice
- Put all the ingredients in a blender and mix on high for 1 minute. Makes 4 servings.
2 Minute Egg in a Basket
Ingredients:
1 buttered slice of whole grain bread
1 egg
Grated cheese
1. Line custard cup or ramekin with buttered bread slice. Break an egg into it. Pierce egg yolk and white with toothpick or fork. Microwave on MEDIUM (50%) for 2 minutes.
Nurishment for the body is nurishment for the mind
These are just a few of the ways to help you keep sane in the morning. The next time Jason won't get out of bed; Lucy needs to be at band practice in 10 minutes and....oh oh! the baby picked this moment to drop a bomb in his diaper...stay calm. You have it all under control. Your kids will get to school and they will be well fed and ready to learn!

Jersey LOL trust me...it works! Kids love being able to have their favorite pancakes or french toast in the middle of the week and because it just gets popped in the toaster they can do it themselves(with supervision if they are little)!
Great tips, thanks for sharing! =)
good ideas
BANANADOG! Way to go. That's a good one.
LOL Thanks Patty. Kids really love it. Even my teens still love them.
These sound interesting! I too liked the banana dog idea. I'm not sure about the eggs in the microwave, but eggs, cheese, and toast sounds good, nonetheless.
Whitney LOL well eggs in the microwave are not as good as on the stove but kids don't seem to look for gourmet when they are hungry and in a hurry.
these are great ideas! awesome hub
Thanks Marye:)

I loved your ideas, thanks. Seems that it is hard to think up great breakfast ideas when you are always on the go. I'm gonna try freezing my french toast (a favorite) and see what comes of that. If it works, I will ask for your address so that I could give you a BIG KISS (HA!!).
Thank you again for publishing such an informative hub.
