BREAST CANCER

The two most common cancers among Indian women are those of the cervical and breast. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in females and it is more common in urban population.

Breast cancer can be preventable disease if we can understand its etiology are vigilent about its symptoms and early diagnostic method like self breast examination and mammography.

The common etiological factors of breast cancer are-

1 – Age:- Cancer of breast is extremely rare below the age of 20, but thereafter the incidence steadily rises so that by the age of 90 nearly 20 % of women are affected.

2 – Genetic:- It occurs more commonly in women with family history of breast cancer than in general cancer.

3 – Diet: - There is increasing evidence that there is link between diets rich in saturated fatty acids and breast disease, including carcinoma.

Breast cancer is also common in obese women.

4 – Endocrine :- It appears to be commoner in nulliparous women than in women who have borne many childrens and have breast fed. It is less common in women who have their first child at an early age, especially if associated with late menarche and early menopause . Commonly affects women with late age of marriage.

5 –Milk factor :- Breast cancer can be diagnose in early stages by knowing abut it and looking for the warning signs so that it can be suspected and diagnose at earlier and by self breast examination by every women in the method given below and can be help by mammography.

Symptoms

Warning symptoms which should be taken care of are ;

1. Lump initially painless then painful, hard etc.

2. Skin fixation.

3. Change in shape of breast.

4. Function of mass with discharging wound.

5. Nipple retraction.

6. Nipple discharge.

7. Mass in axilla.

Self Breast Examination: plays an important role in early detection.

Once a month, check for any change in the normal appearance for feel of your breasts. Look for a lump, hard knot, or skin that thickness or dimples. Report any changes to your doctor. Go for regular breast Examination and Pap tests.

Check your breast using these steps :

Lying Down –

Place a pillow under your right shoulder. Put your right hand under your head. Check your entire breast area with the finger pads of your left hand. Use small circles and follow an up and down patterns. Use light medium and firm pressure over each area of your breast. Repeat these steps on left breast.

Before mirror –

Check for any changes in the shape of appearance of your breast. Look out for any nipple changes such as dimpling or nipple discharge. Inspect your breast in four steps: Arm at side, Arms over head , Hands on hips pressing firmly to flex chest muscles and bending foreword.

In the shower –

Raise your right arm. With soapy hands and fingers that, check your right breast. Use the method describe in the lying down step. Repeat on your left breast.

Mammography:

Mammography plays major role in early detection of breast cancers. The US Food and Drug Administration reports that mammography can find 85 to 90 percent breast cancer in women over 50 and can be discover a lump up to two years before it can be felt. The benefit of mammography far outweigh the risk and inconvenience.

Mammography is a special type of x-ray imaging used to create detailed images of the breast. Mammography use low dose x-ray; high contrast, high-resolution film; and an x-ray system designed specially for imaging the breast, successful treatment of breast cancer depends on early diagnosis.
