Personal Note - Avocados contain a toxic component called persin, which can damage heart, lung and other tissue in many animals. This fruit is very toxic to dogs, cats and most animals. Breeder's Choice, what were you thinking?

I have some Avoderm chunks line cans here...and I read the label and see nothing about avocados in them? Looks ok to me...except there is salt added which could be questionable....but everything seems appropriate....and as I said...no avocado.

Michelle,

Avoderm has changed their formula and removed the avocados from some products. I have not changed my review since there could still be the avocado formulas on the shelves. Lets hope the company stopped including the avocados in the recipes and not just on the labels. The Avoderm formula change has been of recent.

Glad to see you are reading the labels!

I would imagine there is no avocado since none is listed. With as much scrutiny as the pet food industry is finally starting to get...I cannot imagine that would be the case. ;-)

Appreciate the clarification as to why you leave the mention of avocado. Having been promoted to reinspect the labels of what I had on hand upon reading your statements to Avoderm about the avocado...I was rather confused not when I did not see that as an ingredient on any of mine. ;-)

I really struggle to feed a decent and quality product to my kitty baby so I always read the labels carefully. Thx.

excuse the typos...

I meant prompted...not promoted...and there is an extra not in the last sentence of that paragraph too. My fingers do things my brain does not actually tell it to do and I often neglect to truly proof read. haha.

Michelle,

I would believe, as you do, that a pet food company would be running a tight ship right now and doing things the right way. Tests show that a number of pet foods and pet food producers do not list the actual ingredients in a product. I'm thinking at the cost of avocados Avoderm has probably excluded their use.

Hi Susan,

I was looking up a review for Avoderm as I was looking for a cat food low in magnesium & has a gravy similar to the junk food from the grocery store I used to feed.( I have tried many good canned cat foods that I have looked up but they will not eat them. They love the junk>it is frustrating...I don't want to feed them bad stuff. Anyway, one of the cat group forums recommended the Avoderm Natural Select cuts Chicken chunks. I looked it up and this is what was listed under the ingredients:

Why Avocados? Many of the nutrients your cat needs for a healthy skin and fur can be found in the remarkable fruit known as the avocado. Nutrient rich avocados contain vitamins A, E and C in abundance. They’re also an excellent source of balanced nutritional essentials for your cat’s skin and fur health—and good health in general. Avocados are high in folate, potassium, niacin, essential fatty acids, and many other nutrients. They have no cholesterol, very little sodium, and are high in monounsaturated fats. Ounce for ounce, the avocado is simply one of the most nutritious fruits there is.

I came to your pages to see if you had tested this one. I think they are still using the avodcados. (I wondered why avocados for cats anyway (as soon as I read it)and now that I know they are even toxic...I will have to keep looking for a better brand. I found one for dry but I like to use that for when I am away & to supplement the "wet food". I feel better about feeding the wet food. Just can't find the right one.

Cat Woman,

I can't find a healthy cat food, either.  Cats are strict meat eaters so can not take the grains in their diets but these pet food producers failed to learn that little bit of information. Kinda like the avocados, huh?

Breeders Choice addresses questions about Avocado Toxicity in Cats and Dogs on their web site.

I have a 15 year old cat with inflamatory Bowel Disease (IBD) that has been eatting Avoderm canned food almost exclusively for more than 6 months. He is now much healthier and happier since the switch, with no issues with vomitting and diarrhea which are the oprimary symptoms of Avocado toxicity. He no longer has dry skin, he has gained back the weight he lost, and doesn't need daily steroid treatment to keep his IBD in check.
