Roborovski breeding - Learnings

One of the hardest hamsters to breed is the Roborovski Hamster. They are difficult to sex from young to the untrained eye, and notoriously difficult to breed when they get to adulthood.

Breeding Insights and Tips - Environment

The following points have been some learnings I have gathered in my 6 years as a Singapore-based hamster breeder. The few conditions that would encourage breeding will be discussed in this and subsequent hubs.

This hub will cover the overall environment that your hamsters are housed in.

Do's and Don'ts

Roborovski Hamsters are by nature the most shy hamsters you will ever encounter. They are so small and delicate that it takes very little to spook them. I have had hamster owners come tell me why their hamsters don't breed, and after some questioning, found that they keep their hamster cage on the family washing machine, under direct sunlight!

My advice is to house a compatible pair in a cool, quiet corner of the house, preferably not near any electrical appliances or the family computer. Activity around the cage will usually keep them on edge, and how would your pets be able to get down to business if they are constantly on edge?

So first off, find a nice, cool, quiet, dim environment; leave them enough food and water; and just leave them alone. You will find that the peace and quiet will do wonders to their libido, and very soon you will find that they will surprise you with some happy news!

I will unveil the type of hamster bedding that seems to have worked for me all this years in my next hub.
