Brian Westbrook in Highschool

Brian Westbrook led a fairly normal life.  He was born in Washington D.C., and attended DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland.  Like most athletes, he played more than one sport.  In addition to football, Westbrook was also a part of the basketball team at DeMatha.  However, football was by far his best sport as he earned All-Leauge honors and All-Conference honors for his outstanding performance.

Brian Westbrook in College

Brian Westbrook is a threat in the NFL because of his ability to run well, catch well, and gain yardage after receptions. He is perhaps one of the most versatile running backs currently in the National Football Leauge. His skill as an all-purpose piece of the offense were exhibited during his time playing for Villanova University from 1997 - 2001.

Despite being hindered by recurring injuries, Westbrook managed to grab an All-TIme NCAA record for most all-purpose yards at 9,512 yards. Westbrook bested the previous record by more than 250 yards. Additionally, Westbrook was the first ever running back at any collegiate level to run for over 1,000 yards and recieve for over 1,000 in one season. Westbrook claimed honors as an All-American, two time AC-10 offensive player of the year, and received the Walter Payton Award his senior year, denoting his performance as the top collegiate player in Division I-AA.

Brian Westbrook in the News

Brian Westbrook in the NFL

Upon graduating from Villanova University, Westbrook declared himself for the draft. Many teams passed over Westbrook, citing his smaller size, proneness to injury, and Division I-AA rather than Divison I-A college experience. Fortunately, Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid saw potential in Westbrook, and drafted him in the third round. This decision resulted in one of the best unsung picks of the 2002 draft.

Westbrook saw limited play time during the 2002 season, the highlight of witch was throwing a touchdown pass to former Eagle's WR Todd Pinkston. In 2003, Westbrook began to prove his worth and scored 11 touchdowns. In 2004, Westbrook was thrust into a lead role after the departure of RB Duce Staley, and a preseason injury to current co-running back Correll Buckhaulter. Westbrook reprised his roll as the utility RB, and accumulated the most receiving yards for running backs in 2004. Along with QB Donovan McNabb, and WR Terrell Owens, the Eagles reached the Superbowl, only to lose to the mighty New England Patriots.

Despite starting the 2005 season off with 1,200 yards, Westbrook was forced to sit out the rest of the season due to injury. In 2006, Westbrook once again began to work his magic, and did his part in carrying the team following QB Donovan McNabbs season ending injury. The Eagles made the playoffs in 2006, and Westbrook along with his record setting performance against the New York Giants, only to lose in the Conference Championship. In 2007, Westbrook posted another year of solid numbers, with no playoff performances. In the 2008 season, Westbrook played despite minor injuries posting yet another statistically pleasing performance, making him the 7th player in NFL history to have scored over 30 rushing touchdowns and 25 receiving touchdowns.
