Bristol City Football Club are a team who currently play in the Championship which is England's second league (after the Premiership).

The club were first founded in 1897.  The majority of the club's history has been spent yo-yoing between the 2nd and 3rd tiers of the English professional game, although they have also spent time in the 1st and 4th levels. The club has never won any major silverware-the closest they have come was a defeat to Manchester United in the 1909 FA Cup Final. However they have won a large number of more minor trophies, such as the Anglo-Welsh Cup, Gloucestershire Cup and Football League Trophy.

The club have spent the majority of their history playing at their home ground Ashton Gate, where they continue to play to this day. Ashton Gate itself is located in the south of Bristol, and has a total seated and covered capacity of just over 20,000. Their are stands on all four sides of the ground, the Atyeo and Wedlocks are located behind the goals and Dolman and Williams run the length of the pitch along either touchline. The club has won many awards in recent times due to the quality of it's pitch, the size of which is 115 yards by 75 yards. There were plans until quite recently to redevelop some of the stands, although the preferred option for the club now is to build a brand new 30,000 stadium at the nearby Ashton Vale, with the ability to increase the capacity to 40,000 if England host the World Cup. It is possible to drive to the ground but there is little official parking and so the majority of visitors park on side streets. The nearest main railway station is Bristol Temple Meads and the nearest airport Bristol International. Aside from football Ashton Gate has played host to many bigname acts from the music industry, including Elton John, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Neil Diamond and most recently Bon Jovi.

Traditionally Bristol City's main rivals have been Bristol Rovers.  There has also been an intense rivalry between the team and those from south Wales - Cardiff City, Swansea City and newport County.  However in recent years the list of rivals has grown with Swindon and Plymouth now also considered by some to be rivals.

Notable Bristol City Football Club players have included John Atyeo and Billy Wedlock. John Atyeo has made the most appearances of all Bristol City Football Club players at 596 and scored the most goals with 314. Billy Wedlock is the most capped player for England whilst playing for Bristol City.

Notable fans of Bristol City Football Club include John Cleese, Justin Lee Collins and Massive Attack.

The local band The Wurzels are also strongly associated with Bristol City and the fans often sing Wurzels songs as the matches as the above clip shows.
