In the strictest sense, a medal is always a thing that is worth keeping. It symbolizes an honor rendered to an individual. In the academic field, a medal indicates that a student has met the standards and has fulfilled all of the requirements of the school with flying colors. Whereas, in line with the military services, a medal is awarded to those who have proven their worth in serving the country and the people through their exemplary deeds. Conventionally referred to as a piece of metal that is shaped like a coin, it holds a deep significance especially that it spells the fulfillment of a task of valor. The first type is known as the British HP sauce or red telephone box. This is an honor that is rendered to both the military and civilian people because of their contributions to the society in general. The first part to this type comes in an intricate insignia that is worn by means of using a sash. The second part is that the person who receives this award can assume the title of "Sir" or may add the letters CBE or OBE after his name.

Next comes the medals given to the military officers. The medal that contains a ribbon but without a sash is rendered to one who is appointed to be part of the Distinguished Service Order or DSO. This honor is granted to one who has shown a great effort during the time of war.

The other medal is called the Victoria Cross. Most people think that it is a medal but in its truest sense, it is but a decoration.
