Brittany Locklear, I will never give up

Too Close To Home
On a cold, grey, dreary morning in January 1998, Brittany Locklear was standing outside of her home at the end of the drive way waiting on her school bus. Her mother would stand on the porch and watch her but this particular day she had to run back into the house to use the bathroom. When she returned, Brittany was not there. Her mother assumed that she had gotten on the bus.
Moments later neighbors came beating on the doors screaming that "they" believed that Brittany may have been Kidnapped. Her mother immediately had her father-in-Law take her to the school. Brittany wasn't there. Immediately an Amber alert had been issued and a massive search began to find Brittany.
Neighbors that lived close by ( about 200 yards) seen an unfamiliar brown pickup truck in the area and pass by Brittany's house. In the beginning of the investigation it was reported as being a blue older model truck with a camper, and one without a camper. An exact picture of the truck has yet to be determined.
I lived at the time only seven miles from the Location of Brittany's kidnapping. This was an underdeveloped 14 mile stretch of wooded land mostly leased by deer hunters and Hunt Clubs. It was a very close community even though going next door to see your neighbor was quite a walk. As soon as word got out that Brittany was missing every deer hunter from surrounding counties came to search.
Over the next couple of hours only items of Brittany's were found. Her bookbag had been thrown out of the window at a stop sign. Further down were pieces of her clothing. The Kidnapper appeared to be leading them to Brittany. "Was he trying to draw atttention to himself"? Did he want Brittany to be found in a hurry to read about it or see it on TV"? Unanswered questions just haunt me, grip at me every time I think about it.
Sunrise the next morning the search crew had doubled. Within hours they found Brittany naked in a drainage ditch, she had been raped and drowned. The police specualated that it happened shortly after she was abducted. Was it premeditation or a random act by an unknown assailant living close by. It is believed that whoever abducted Brittany was very close to her. I assume these speculations were made because there was no sounds of a struggle or screams at the time it happened.
The Investigation
With little to go on, the police hoped frantically for leads. The case had already became a priority with the State Bureau Investigation. Within the first week there were over 700 leads, they were operating 24 hours a day. Brittany's funeral was videoed hoping to find someone "out of place" or for any other clues they could gather. Police and investigators went to the funeral as well to watch for possible suspects.
After a year of searching endlessly for the pickup truck, frustrated officials created a task force. At the one year anniversary, the case was considered cold.
Everyone that Brittany came in contact with was given lie detectors tests. The principal at the school, for he passed by Brittany's house on the way to school every morning. There had been one occasion where he had picked up Brittany and gave her a lift to school because she was waiting on the bus in the rain. Brittany's mother's boyfriend and his father were giving lie detector tests. They all passed.
Close to five years later, police and SBI thought they had a crack in the case. A Fort Bragg soldier had been arrested for armed robbery, while searching his locker they found pictures of Brittany. It was rumored that this suspect participated in the search for Brittany as well. After being questioned by the Hoke County Police the conclusion was he didn't match the description or profile but has not been ruled out entirely.
11 years later this case has still not been solved. The Local and State Officials are hoping that someone will remember anything significant and that the killer is in the area. They are no close in solving this case than they were in the beginning.
They do have DNA of the killer.
Private Investigators Needed
If you are a Private Investigator, I plea with you to come to North Carolina and help solve or solve this case. Too many things don't add up. The Profile of the killer was so vague it leaves it open for anyone. There is a reward..

fortune - another of lifes' horrible tragedies. There was a girl of seven, where I lived, that met a very similar end. I can't remember the details (time span etc) but they caught her killer. He was known to her and had even helped the task force hunt for clues and so on.
I hope that justice will be done, for Brittany and her people.
Thanks Advisor and Frog
The Hoke County Police Department feels the same way. I am not sure, this being such a small area, people tend to scratch each other's backs and rumor has it drugs were involved. I wish I could hire a PI to come here and bust up a couple of counties as well as find Brittany's murder.
OMG, these cases happen everyday.. horrific is the only word I can use. My heart bleeds for these parents with no answers. Thank you for giving this precious girl's story a voice.
I'm sorry for Brittany, she seems so cute that she doesn't deserve what happened to her! I wish I could help...
Thanks Candie and Shame,
Before i wrote this, I checked to see if there was anything written about Brittany on the web. Nothing since 2004 except NC most wanted. Nothing. Couldn't believe it. Hopefully it will spark an interest and more will be done. This could be someone still living in the area, how dangerous that thought is.
Sad story indeed, nicely written Fortune.
Thanks BC. I always have said that if you don't stand up for something you will fall for anything. I have chose to stand up for missing and endangered children and teens for the last 5 years. It is sickening and heartbreaking at times but these innocent children need people to care and stand up for them. thanks again

Very heartbreaking story FortuneRep, I am glad that you are standing up for the helpless and their families, it must be heartbreaking though. People say that I am way over protective with my children, but this is exactly the reason why. It is horrible that we have to practically lock up our kids and not allow them to play in their own yards unless we can see them. Thanks for standing up for the precious innocent lives. I hope that they find the Murderer soon, so the family can find some peace.
I certainly hope so as well. Thanks Whikat, you are appreciated.

i would like to say that the sheriff and its police force did not do their job. i was living there on that road when that little girl was killed. my son was only four months old then. they did little to let me know what had happened. i had to find out from my neighbors.i have always tried to remember something from that morning. when i think about her it brings tears to my eyes . i say to myself how can someone be so evil.i also think that could of been me or my son.
Tara, if you are from Scotland or Robeson or Hoke County please email me. I would like to talk to you. I am in Scotland.

McNeil who was just arrested in Fayetteville for the rape/murder of Shanyia Davis would have been 18 at the time Brittany's murder. Both five yr. old girls. Was Shanyia his first victim? Did he live in the area?
Melissa,
the circumstances could possibly be similiar, It was rumored that the mother owed a drug dealer but I think it is someone who was close, they have the DNA of the guy and that puzzles me why nothing has been done.
