Brix Linking Cell Phone

Every once in a while, I see some new design for something that seems intriguing, but I have to ask myself how practical it is. Case in point: the Brix PMP/Cell phone concept by designer Seokwon Hong.

As you can see, Brix has a typical design of a cellular phone. In fact, I daresay that it bears a strong resemblance to the over-hyped iPhone. It even appears to be black and white and have that complete touchscreen all over. I double-checked, and it has no bezel to speak of.

Like that iPhone, it seems to do more than just take your calls. It also has some sort of Portable Media Player action going on, and can probably play whatever video you can download onto it in 16:9 format.

You can also see that, like the Transformers, there is definitely more to Brix than meets the eye. Brix is a definitely an appropriate name, as these Brix cell phones fit together like Lego bricks. The only difference is that Lego bricks don’t form a larger screen when linked together, but Brix does. Two link together to form a screen with 4:3 resolution, and there is that one very odd combination with four linked Brixes (Brixi? Whatever the plural is.) along with two other Brix (that’s a good plural, stick with that) as some sort of score and information indicator.

I suppose that the possibilities are endless as far as screen size is concerned. All you need is a ton of Brix. Of course, critics of this are wondering if it would be easier to just buy a large flatscreen TV than to buy a bunch of Brix. Considering how cellphone technology is getting cheaper and easier to make, maybe it would be cheaper. And hey, it might be handy to just leave the home and break off a piece of the TV as you go. However, who wants to have their TV broken up every once in a while?

I’m not really sure what other features the Brix would have, but I think assembling a few together might make for an excellent media to surf the net. If it had a GPS, then you could link them together and have a map that would be very easy to fold up.

The only thing I can’t figure out is what that little thing sticking out the side of it, is that how it links together? I wonder if there is some magnetic interlocking thing going on here. Well, hopefully this will be out soon, and we'll see how it goes.
