Brunswick Street, Screenplay, Part 1
55EXT. BALTIMORE HARBOR 1907-NIGHT A LONG SHOT DOWN THE STREET, THEN A PAN TO A STEAMER, AND A CLOSE UP OF THE SHIP.
It is nearing midnight at the Baltimore Port. The ship docks and VLAD AMIRAN steps out, he’s wearing a black suit and tie, black leather dress boots, and has a cane. He is sixty-five years old. He begins walking down the street, following the masses of people.
INT. BAR-NIGHT Vlad enters the nearest bar. A sign reading Old Hundred Pub. He sits down at the bar, and asks for a drink.
BARTENDER Can I help you Sir?
VLAD Yes, I’d like a glass of red wine. The bartender pours the drink, hands it to Vlad, and Vlad drops some coins on the counter. Vlad sets the glass down, but doesn’t drink. He overhears a conversation across the bar, and stares in their direction.
MAN 1 A friend of mine gave me a make of this place called Brunswick. It looks like an interesting place...
MAN 2 Where is it?
MAN 1 Over on the Potomac.
CAMERA FOLLOWS VLAD OVER TO THE TABLE. He examines the men before speaking. The men are wearing collared shirts and dress pants. They look at each other apprehensively.
VLAD Good evening, and sorry to bother, but I over heard you talking about Brunswick.
MAN 1 Yes. We were. Why do you ask?
VLAD Well, you see... I was planning on going there, to buy some property. But, I wouldn’t mind some company on my trip...
MAN 1 Well, we don’t know really how to get there, so sure, why not?
The Men have a map. They are thrilled to have a ride.
VLAD Excellent. Meet me outside in five minutes.
The Men look at each other, shrug and continue talking. EXT. OUTSIDE BAR-NIGHT
Meanwhile, Vlad walks outside. He walks down a near by alley, bites and kills a man sitting in a prototype Model T. Vlad throws the Man out of the vehicle, hops in the car, and drives it around to the front of the bar. The Men walk out front to meet Vlad.
MAN 1 Thought you’d left us, Sir.
INT. PROTOTYPE-MODEL T-NIGHT Both of the men get in the car.
VLAD (he turns around and looks at both of them) Of course not, I told you I wanted company.
MAN 2 Sir, how long is the ride?
VLAD Should be about a day. In seconds, Vlad jumps in the back of the car, stabs one, and bites the other in the neck. Vlad heads down the main street of the harbor.
EXT. VICTORIAN HOUSE-LATE AFTERNOON-NEXT DAY, 1907
Vlad is standing in front of a beautiful Victorian house on Brunswick Street. The sun is about to set. Vlad looks up at the house, grins, shows his fangs, and walks up the stairs into the house, leaving the door wide open. Shrieks and screams echo out the front door.

KELLY Ash, I know you can. I have faith in you. You will do great. That place will sell in no time.
ASHLAND Thanks, hun. You always think too highly of me.
KELLY (excited) Hey, there’s some dude looking at you. He ain’t too shabby either.
ASHLAND I think I’ve seen him before. Ya know, I had another dream about him last night.
KELLY What? You had a dream about him.... Hmm... okay. (shrugs) He’s got that mid-thirties dazed and confused look. Ya know?
ASHLAND Kel, I need to run. Gotta meet my Dad and pick up the For Sale sign. I’ll be hittin’ the road early tomorrow morning to drop the sign off in Brunswick.
KELLY Goodluck, hun. Call me if you need anything! Okay? Ashland gets up and gives Kelly a hug, and leaves her at the table.
ASHLAND Thanks, Kel. Talk to ya tomorrow... We are doin’ lunch, right?
KELLY Of course! Bye!

He is wearing a navy blue short sleeved polo shirt, and olive green pleated kakis, and a dark brown leather braided belt.
ASHLAND Hi, Dad. Where’s the For Sale sign? I need to get back to the dorm and finish something.
DON Hi, Ashland. How are you sweetie? The sign is sitting next to the storage closet, in the back room. Go get it, and bring it to me. Ashland goes to retrieve the signs, and then walks into her Dad’s office and stands in the doorway.
ASHLAND I’m fine...just had some dinner with Kelly over at Firestone’s. That place is excellent. Ashland walks over to her father, lays the sign and chains on top of his desk, then gives him a hug.
DON Oh, yes, remind me to take us there for your mother’s birthday. Ashland...this task is very easy, the sign holder is already in the ground. All you have to do is hook these onto the chains that are already hanging on the post.
ASHLAND Yes, Dad. I won’t have a problem. Ashland gives her Dad another hug, grabs the sign and chains off the desk and walks out of the office, and out the front door.

KELLY (V.O.) What! Where? Let’s go back down there!
ASHLAND (into the phone) I really want to, but should really read over my paper a bit more, then get to bed.

ASHLAND Mary, go to bed you stupid ass. I have to get up in a few hours, damn it. You should just drop out already.
MARY-KATE Oh my gosh, you need to get drunk, and have fun. I have a paper to finish.
ASHLAND Then take your damn laptop and finish your paper somewhere else!
MARY-KATE Fine! I’ll go to bed! Mary-Kate is a pushover, when it comes to guys, girls, it doesn’t matter. Ashland shoves a pillow over her head, laying on her stomach.

DON (V.O.)
Ash, is that you?
ASHLAND (into cell phone) It’s me! I am just double checking with you, the house is at 686 Brunswick Street, correct?
DON (V.O.) Yes. 686, is the house number, that’s right. It is the nicest house on the street, you’ll find it.
ASHLAND (into cell phone) Okay, bye. Talk with you later. Love you.
DON (V.O.) Love you, too. Bye.

KELLY (V.O.) Hey, yea, me too, see you in 10 minutes? And why do you sound all hyper?
ASHLAND (into cell phone) I’m not hyper, just happy! Okay, I'll see you in a few, bye. Ashland hangs up the phone, and proceeds to get ready. She grabs her purse, cell phone, and slips on tennis shoes.
INT. LANGDON DINING HALL-DAY Ashland and Kelly are sitting at a table in the dining hall. They are talking and eating.
KELLY So how did everything go this morning?
ASHLAND Great, except for a bird crapping everywhere. Then, I found this old piece of paper advertising some dude’s jewelry from over a hundred years ago. Oh and I found an ancient map of Brunswick. Ashland hands Kelly the papers. Kelly squints her eyes looking at the papers.
ASHLAND (CONT’D) Then I saw the Man again...the one from my dreams... He was starring at me through a window in the house across the street.
KELLY (suspicious) That is creepy... You think everyone looks familiar to you... So, do you really think it’s the same guy? Those dreams again, huh? Damn it! Ash, I want a hot stalker!
ASHLAND (concerned) Well the guy in the window did look like the guy last night... It’s kind of creeping me out, but it in a good way. If that makes sense...
KELLY Of course it makes a hell of a lot of sense, you are all excited, creeped out, and intrigued. I completely understand. Okay, well for future reference, stalkers aren’t good, but in this case I am all ears.
ASHLAND It’s not like he’s harming me or anything.
KELLY Well, that could come next. But his overwhelming hotness is a definite plus.
ASHLAND If I see him again, I want to say hi or somethin’, that way I can see whether he’s a prospect or not.
KELLY Well, I’d like to be there to make sure he’s not wacko. Nothing can happen to my Ash!
ASHLAND (laughing) Sure, come along, maybe he has a friend for you... Kelly and Ashland get up from their table, put the trays on a rotation belt to get cleaned, and exit the dining hall.
EXT. MIDDLE OF CAMPUS-DAY The sun is out, and birds are chirping. There are many white doves in the air. There are girls in capri pants and shorts and tees, walking around everywhere. Kelly and Ashland are walking towards the center of campus, and hang out by a bench.
KELLY Why aren’t there any good men here?
ASHLAND Well...because we go to a practically all girl school.
KELLY Thanks for reminding me, Ash. Ha. Ha.
ASHLAND No. But, I am serious. What if this guy is really great? He could have a whole pack of guys we could meet, and hang out with.
KELLY (pressing her hands together) Okay, well, lets pray. Ha Ha. Well I better get off to my class... Talk to you later, hun.
ASHLAND Alright. Hey, I’m gonna call Seth, and see what he might know about this dude, or this jewelry paper I found...he has lived in Brunswick all his life...
KELLY Yea, tell me later what he says, okay?
ASHLAND Bye!
KELLY Bye!

There is a small stool by the closet, and a refrigerator by the door.
ASHLAND (into the phone) Seth!
SETH (V.O.) Ash! How the hell are ya buddy? I am so glad to hear from you. Well, anyone other than Paul, or my Grandma. Ha. Ha.
ASHLAND (into the phone) I’m good. How are you doing? How’s work? School has been crappy. But, I’m getting through, just two more semesters, including this one.
SETH (V.O.) Same old crappy life of a carpenter. What else is new...we must do dinner soon.
ASHLAND (into the phone) I do have a question for ya...
SETH (V.O.)
Shoot.
ASHLAND (into the phone) I was over at my first listing this morning. The old Hughes place.
SETH (V.O.) Yea. What about it?
ASHLAND (into the phone) Well... I found a paper from 1907 under a floor board that says Amiran Jewels. I also found a map of Brunswick... What is that about?
SETH (V.O.) My grandma could tell ya about that house...
ASHLAND (into the phone) That would be great...
SETH (V.O.) Just come over around 6..okay?
ASHLAND See ya then Seth. Love ya. Bye.
SETH Love ya too. See ya later.

ASHLAND God? God, if you hear me, please let everything go well, with this new guy. Well, I mean... That is if you want us to meet. That would be really great... I need a nice guy in my life right now... School is so stressful, but I think I’m pulling through okay... Please let something really good happen... Oh and I do love Dad..but he’s just so annoying sometimes...it’s so hard...I just get frustrated with him easily...since we are so alike...Thank You...AMEN... Ashland stands up in the isle of the pew, and turns around and slowly walks towards the door, and looks up at the cloud painted ceiling and smiles.
EXT. CHAPEL - OUTSIDE - DAY (AFTERNOON) Ashland is sitting on the steps. She looks up at the big oak tree. She sees the white dove again, looking down at her. She is tapped on the shoulder by the Man. The Man is wearing blue jeans, a black blazer, a white collared shirt underneath the blazer and black combat boots. He is very tall, and has brownish black curly hair to his shoulders.
GARRETT (smiling) I didn’t mean to startle you, Ashland.
ASHLAND (intense yet curious face) It’s you... From the restaurant, the alley, and the freaking house... How do I know you?
GARRETT (smiling) Well...Let’s just say we’ve met before...but not in real time.
ASHLAND (brightened up and excited) Oh my God...Is this really happening now? Or am I...
GARRETT I know it seems crazy, but those dreams were supposed to become more...we were meant to meet...I have wanted to find you for so long...too long in fact...you have no idea...
ASHLAND So, where do you live?
GARRETT That’s kind of a difficult question...
ASHLAND (laughing) Why is that? Well..a name would be nice...
GARRETT It’s Garrett. Garrett Hughes.
ASHLAND Hughes?
GARRETT Yes... I saw you this morning. It’s actually my parent’s house. Well, it was.
ASHLAND (smiling) Well... It’s nice to meet you Garrett. I’m Ashland Monroe...but I guess you already knew that... She reaches out, and shakes his hand.
GARRETT Ashland? Would you meet me later in the park? I want to talk some more... Let’s say around 10:30?
ASHLAND Why so late?
GARRETT I have to work at the Black Comedy Pub, in downtown.
ASHLAND Oh, Okay. Sure, that is fine...can you meet me here first?
GARRETT Okay, I’ll meet you here on the steps. He winks at her...and smiles at her. She smiles back, and looks up at the tree again. The dove is gone. She turns her head back in the direction of Garrett. He is gone.
EXT. CHAPEL STEPS-NIGHT Ashland is lying down on the steps, asleep. It’s around 11 p.m.
GARRETT (shaking Ashland) Ashland? Wake up! Have you been here the whole time?
ASHLAND Holy, Shit! My parents and Kelly must be freaking out by now...I usually talk to everyone a few times during the day...Oh My GOD. I have been pretty tired lately, and well, yep, I fell asleep, right here. Ashland looks at her phone, seventeen missed calls and five new messages.
GARRETT You’d better call someone to let them know you are okay.
ASHLAND Yea, I know.
GARRETT Why don’t you go up to your room, and do that. I’ll wait here. Garrett stands on the steps. Ashland runs down the Chapel steps very fast, across the lawn.
INT. ASHLAND’S DORM-NIGHT Ashland runs into the stair well, into the elevator.
