How Buckhead got its name

I was born in Atlanta in 1952. Damn I just can't believe that I turn 57 years old this summer in July. I can see the signs of it happening now that my hair is thinner and is graying. My body hurts here and there most often when it rains. Recently in the past few years I've noticed more and more people are opening doors for me and actually being nicer. It used make me mad but I kinda like it now. Even today a man swung a door open wider so that it was still somewhat open when I got to it. Young people men and women alike seem to be nicer and I think it is that my hair is graying and thinning out and I bet they can tell my body is hurts as I walk.

I had always believed it was because we are in the South. I mean not only are we in the South but we're in Atlanta. I do think that is the reason people in Atlanta are nice but now I think there is more to it.

I have always lived in Atlanta. I have traveled elsewhere actually lots of places in the world but I have always lived in Atlanta. Buckhead is beautiful in the spring time. I go to Buckhead with my wife all the time. Buckhead as Atlanta long time residents know it is changing. Some of smaller stores that lined Peachtree Street are now torn down and taller buildings are in the process of rising up. Oops, it must be that damn age thing I was drifting again,

Anyway,

Well to any respect I am here to tell you about an area in Atlanta named Buckhead.

Buckhead isn't on the maps yet it is there. You tell someone that you'll meet them in Buckhead they will know. Travel to Atlanta on a business trip or stop by while your passing through and go to Buckhead for dinner, lunch, cocktails maybe shopping or just the sites. The area has as long as I can remember always been called  Buckhead. Visit Atlanta tell your friends when you return oh yea I went to Buckhead. They will say great! Was it neat or as nice as I have heard and your response will be yea or yes it was. It was actually a very nice area in Atlanta.

Then you can tell them this little true story,

A small fact is how in did Buckhead gets its name. Here you go.

Back in the cowboys and Indians days there was a general store in an area in Atlanta where a hunter killed a deer. Well then they cut the deer's head off and hung it on a wall what I would guess was a country store. Days later someone walked by and said "oh there's a bucks head". Yea to us now it seems strange but it is true.

Years later on the name "bucks head" became Buckhead and that area part of Atlanta filled with fabulous resturants and eateries as well as bars, shopping and even more shopping is and always will be known as Buckhead.

There is a road in Atlanta named Tuxedo Road. Well this road is actually west off Peachtree Road. Leaving Buckhead just after where Peachtree Street and Roswell intersect you turn right and about two miles down on the left you'll see the the Govenors Mansion. All along this street turning down all the little side streets you'll see some of the older great mansions that were once owned and probably still are by grand children of the Woodruff family. We all know who The Woodruffs are? The Woodruff family came up with Coca Cola.

Damn rambling again,

Another great mansion owned by the Atlanta Historical Society is the Swan House in Buckhead. I would say one of the best secrets with a mile of Peachtree Street in Buckhead. The old south the true old southern mansion.

Geez even Elton John has a condo in Buckhead.

You heard how Buckhead got its name from a true Atlantan.

Thanks

I hope you enjoyed this little story about Buckhead from a true southerner. Comments if you've been to Buckhead and didn't know how it got its name.
