That's sounds great! Imagine, all those people in the 80s and 90s who bought those electric cars some of us considered impractical, are saving quite a lot of money.

You've got the right idea. Back in the sixties, there were conversion plans available through The Whole Earth Catalog. Maybe those days will make a comeback.

Electric cars have been around since the first days of automobiles, however, when internal combustion engines became more dependable and easier to start (electric starters instead of hand-cranking)and gas stations popped up everywhere, the electric car all but passed away. The time has come for it's return in a big way.

I would never have dreamed that i will be able to build a hybrid car with just a little help. Never knew they were kind of around before either. WOW!

This is really great info.

The world needs to take the issue of electric cars seriously.

Great article Lee.

Electric cars are going to only get more popular...You saw what the price of oil did when the middle east was unstable...do you think that will change anytime soon?

I just tallied the results reported for 50 different home brew electric car conversion projects, for an average cost of $10,000 one typically gets a battery range of 35 miles ad a top speed of 64 mph. The good part, about 2 cents a mile energy cost and a quiet ride giving owners the "EV Grin"

Interesting concept -- building your own electric car. I remember when electric cars were just a concept. It's good to see that they are a good alternative.

"You can convert your auto to electrical next weekend."

Might be good to have a backup plan for getting to work on Monday, in a survey of 50 home conversions, owners report needing 120 to 300 hours spread over 2 to 12 months to complete their project.
