One of the greatest feelings in the world is being able to make a living doing something you love. However, it's important to be careful when making the transition from hobby to business. Yes, you love doing it, but if you don't watch your work practices or are not careful what you choose it's easy to get burnt out. The primary concern is making sure that you keep having fun at this as much as possible and there are ways to do that.
First off, creating a business out of something you love makes it a lot easier to stay motivated. Working for yourself requires a lot of effort and self-control. No one is going to tell you when you need to start or stop work, no one is going to get upset if you call in sick, so the incentive to get all your work done is entirely up to you.
When you're working like mad trying to build a business, burnout is almost inevitable at some point in the game. If you're doing something you love that burnout is slowed considerably, and if you play it right the recovery is a lot faster. The key to avoiding crippling burnout is moderation. Yes, you love what you do for a living, but you must set specific hours for yourself and stick to them. If you throw all the energy you have into this venture and work on it day and night, you'll burn out very quickly and have difficulty re-starting.
The great thing about doing something you already love is that chances are, you have ready-made connections. You know which of your acquaintances have similar interests, you know the ones who do the same thing or the ones who will pay for the product of your labor. This is a HUGE thing for a start-up business, every customer or client is precious so even just a few can be a much-needed jumpstart as you're getting started.
It takes time and experience to develop a skill set and wide store of knowledge for any given job. If you make a business out of something you love and have been doing for a long time, you already have an amazing asset for your business. This business will cater to your well-developed talents and you will be able to provide very knowledgeable customer service, an increasingly rare commodity in the business world.
Finally, if you truly love what you're doing for a living you'll be able to put the kind of passion into it that'll make it great. Chances are, your pride in quality work and a job well-done will be all the more pronounced because of your interest in what you've chosen to do. The result? Superior products, outstanding customer service and the desire to continue putting work into the business so you will eventually have a well-established, trusted business that will have a reputation for excellence.
