Building a Bicycle

Parts everywhere

I am fascinated by people who can take a bunch of parts, put them all together and end up with a bicycle.

My boyfriend was recently bitten by the fixed gear fever. He keeps rebuilding a bike he got on Ebay, trying to make it perfect. He's been building wheels and the house is filling up with bike parts. At least he's gotten some good parts from EBAY and other online bike clubs.

When is the last time you had a bike? I have one. A yard-sale special that I rarely ride. I'm out of practice and I feel like I'm taking my life in my hands every time I get on it. I did get a safety helmet though. We didn't wear those when we were kids so it takes some getting used to.

He wants me to get good enough to ride on bike trails with him, but I know I would only slow him down.

I've always wanted to make a crazy bicycle to ride in parades.

What kind of riding do you like?

I hear somewhere that Michelle Pfeiffer (the actress) also likes to build bikes in her spare time.

I knew Johhny Berry well. I am still in contact with his son. You could not have met a nicer man. He once built a bicycle for Reg Harris to try to beat the world speed record. It had fibreglass streamlining.

Hi Bill, I know someone that wants to ask you more questions. Do you have a contact email address? Thanks.

Well, there's fitness riding, there's fun riding fast with a gang of people, and there's one-on-one riding with a sweetheart. In the last, speed isn't necessary. It's spending time with the person and enjoying their company that makes the ride fun.

james, I contacted the owner of the bike and this is what he said:

"Thanks!  If you'd like to respond for me:

Johnny Berry passed away in the 70's.  The only way to get one of his bikes now would be to luck into a used one as I did.  Frame builder Doug Fattic may be an individual to contact as he also loves Johnny's bikes and would be the most likely individual to know of one available somewhere.  Doug is also very interested in communicating with anyone who knew Johnny or visited his shop in Manchester."

He doesn't appear to have a website, although I do know he has email.

My boyfriend has more info here for you:

Thanks.  Can you post this to him:

If you go to the Classic Rendezvous site http://www.classicrendezvous.com/  you'll see a link to the CR email list.  From there you can find a link to go to the archives.  Search through Classic Rendezvous and it will be easy to find a post from Doug Fattic that will have his email address.  If you also look at the frame builder's email list (same archives), Doug is an active member there as well."

I love bikes too. Fixed gears are great because they have much lower maintenence than the geared ones. You can retro fit older bikes to make them perform like new but theives stay away because they aren't as attractive.

I knew Johnny Berry, he was my local cycle dealer. He built my Ephgrave racing bike in 1963. He had a very good reputation. The building in Rusholme Manchester is still there, now a take-away eating place.
