Trying To Decide Whether Or Not To Get A Hair Bumpit?

I am of course writing about the almighty hair Bumpit. This is my opinion about the product. I have read some good, and some bad reviews about it. And I wanted to give my perspective on it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, I have nothing but good to say about the Bumpits inserts for your hair. So here is how it went for me.

Bump It Up

Before the Bumpit

I was recently introduced to the Bumpit by a close friend of mine. Now, the Bumpit of course serves many purposes. First of all, it makes even very thin hair look full and thick. Second of all, it can make a plain Jane pony tail look classy and sheek like a soap opera star's hair-do. But for me, it did better than both of those combined.

I have about a quarter sized bald spot right at about the crown of my head, (actually, a little bit lower.) And I have ALWAYS worn my hair up in a pony tail. To make matters worse, my hair is really thin. I have spent I am sure thousands of dollars on hair products over the years to make my hair thicker, and also curly, (as curly seems to help with the thickening part.)

People are always asking me why I never wear my hair down. It has always been an embarrassing subject for me, in which most people never seem to understand. Even the closest of friends and family tell me that the bald spot isn't that big of a deal. But when I was in elementary school, I one day decided to wear my hair up in a half pony tail. I rubber banded the ponytail right above the bald spot, and figured that the hair lying over that spot would cover it up with no problem. However, when I was doing some of my school work, I had my head tilted to the side as I was writing a paper, in which the bald spot was revealed to the whole class. Only of course because the girl sitting next to me saw the bald spot, and proceeded to call me "Mr. Clean." So of course, everyone wanted to see, and had a lot of questions to ask.

I have the bald spot because that part of my head was not quite done growing when my mother had me. So, it's not the most embarrassing thing to ever happen to a girl of course, but at that age, and already being self-conscious, even trying to explain that it was just an act of God was a hard thing to do. Some of the other kids still laughed about it. I thankfully had one good friend that stuck up for me, and it just so happened that she was the girl everyone was afraid of. So I still to this day feel very blessed to have had her there that day. :)

Thanks To The Bumpit, I Can Finally Wear My Hair Down

My friend discovered the Bumpit for herself, as she is one to always try and find something new and beautiful to do with her hair. After she had been wearing her Bumpit for a few days, she thought about me, and thought that it might be the solution to my ponytail ordeal. She made a special trip over to my house one night just to see if the bumpit could be the answer.

She placed the Bumpit in position, and added a couple bobby pins, and low and behold.....my hair was down, and no matter which way I turned my head, or even tilted my head for that matter, you could NOT see the bald spot. I used my hand mirror to look in my big mirror to see the back of my head. I stood in front of that mirror for probably close to an hour, just in disbelief.

After wearing my hair up everyday for over 29 years, my hair was down, and I looked "normal." Oh! And not to mention, after the thousands of dollars I had spent on hair products over the years, the solution was only $10.00. I thought that was a pretty good deal considering I had spent well over $10.00 just on one bottle of "volumizing" mousse.

I have read some reviews that say that the Bumpit does not work on thin hair, and I disagree. Now, I don't have the thinnest hair in the whole wide world, but it is not by any means thick, and it is fine and limp. I do think that if you have thin hair, there is more work involved. Use mousse first of all, and use hairspray.

Thin Hair Tips

If you have thin hair like myself, then you know what a pain it is to make it look good. As I said before, I have spent major bucks on hair products over the years. There are many reasons for thin hair. A major reason is that it is hereditary. Another could be stress (which I think made my inherited thin hair worse). And possibly medication.

Whatever the reason, there are a few things you can do to help. These few tips have helped me get a fuller head of hair.

•First, start taking a prenatal vitamin, or a vitamin B complex supplement. I suggest the prenatal vitamin if you can stomach it. The prenatal vitamin has folic acid and the vitamin B's, along with quite a few other vitamins that help your hair grow. Prenatal vitamins are good for you anyway- so why not? They do sometimes make me feel a little queasy, but once you get used to them, this eases up. I have seen quite a difference in the thickness of my hair after taking these for a while. It definitely helps.

•Second, rid yourself of stress! Stress does make your hair fall out! I know when I have gone through periods of stressful times at my job, I notice a lot more hair coming out when I comb in the morning. Once I have balanced myself back out, it stops. Again, vitamin B! Vitamin B's are excellent for stress- we need them. There is a remarkable difference in my mood when I take these. I take a vitamin B complex before exercising, (my step-aerobics.) I have much more energy, and my mood is at least 50% better. I call them my "coping pills". So again, if you are stressed out at home, or at the job, or just in general, and you are having trouble with thinning hair, give this a shot! I assure you that you will see a huge difference.

•And third, if you are using a lot of hairspray and mousse, as I do myself, to give your hair a thicker appearance, then you are probably dealing with a lot of tangles when you get out of the shower. I myself use Pantene conditioner. I think it is the best for softening your hair and helping with tangles. But! I keep a plastic pick comb in my shower, and pick through my hair as I am rinsing the conditioner out. With the water and conditioner going through your hair at the same time as you are picking it, not as much hair comes out. If you pick it out after you get out of the shower when all of the conditioner is out of your hair, it is much harder. And I find that I end up basically "ripping" my hair out, trying to comb through it.

The healthier your diet is of course, the better off your hair will be. Your whole body, AND your hair are constantly affected by your diet. As hard as it can be, "getting healthy" is THE best thing that you can do for your hair. You can read about how I have started making major changes in my diet and exercise here.

Tips For Making the Bumpit Insert Look O'Natural

The Bumpits for your hair are very easy to insert.

•All you have to do, (what I find easiest,) is take your thumbs right behind the back of the top of your ears, and pull that hair forward. Place the Bumpit right at the part that you made with your hair (at the line). I like to place a couple of bobby pins on the bottom of the Bumpit and onto my head to ensure that it is not going to move. Spray that just a little bit with hairspray for a little extra hold.

Then pull the hair back over the top of the Bumpit. Now, the Bumpit has little teeth at the top and bottom so that your hair has something to grasp. So, you do want to make sure that you distribute the hair over the top of it evenly, and maybe even "poof" it up a bit and spray again with hairspray. Just make sure that you cannot see the teeth through your hair. It's very easy to do.

You can leave your hair just like that if that's what you want, but if you are not clipping it back at all, or using any bobby pins to pull anymore of your hair back, then you should use some finishing, or freeze hair spray to make sure that your hair doesn't move, showing the teeth later in the day.

•For a "fancier" hair-do, pull some of your hair back and pin it right in the back of your head behind the Bumpit. This looks like the soap opera stars hairdo's in my opinion. I love it, and I think it looks beautiful.

Now, after all of these years of wearing my hair up and in a pony tail, I got used to my hair being up and off of my neck. So I still like my pony tail a good part of the time.

•So now, I put the Bumpit in, and bobby pin it just a little in the back, and then pull my hair up into the ponytail, either high or low-it looks great either way.

But when I am going out for a night on the town, I love the fact that I can wear my hair down all of the way and not have to worry about that stupid bald spot. If only men could wear Bumpits! (No offense to bald men, I think they are sexy!)

•Curly hair is fine too, if not better! I have found that if you scrunch your hair before hand, and then follow all of the steps the same way, the curly hair hides the teeth even easier than when it is straight. Now, like I said, I have thin hair, so if your hair is already thick, then either way is perfectly fine.

•For the people with thin hair~ USE MOUSSE! It helps thicken your hair. Again, in my opinion, scrunching your hair to make it curly will help. When you get out of the shower, put the mousse in while your hair is still wet. Spray it with your favorite hairspray, and then blow-dry with a diffuser. Scrunch up the hair as you are drying it, and continue to spray. After you have followed all of the steps to insert the Bumpit, and you have everything the way you want it, IF you can still see the teeth of the Bumpit~ then pull your hair up & away from the teeth, and spray with freezing hairspray. This works for me personally, every time and without fail!

Great For a Wedding Hair-Do

My best friend recently had a Florida beach wedding. She wanted a bit of an up-do, nothing too fancy. But she was looking to go the cheapest way possible. (The cost of a wedding alone doesn't leave you much $$ for your hair..wink wink.)

So, I did her hair on her wedding day to try to help cut the cost a little bit. Of course you probably already know what I'm going to say! Yes, of course we used the Bumpit.

All we did was scrunch her hair, and put in a few extra really tight curls with a tiny curling iron. I put the Bumpit in, pulled her hair up high, right behind the Bumpit, and used a clip to hold her hair up, I then place the tiara in front of her "bump."  I pulled a few little curls out for her bangs and curled those....and voila! She had a beautiful up-do, that cost her nothing.

And I got the credit for her beautiful hair that day!

Match the Bumpit Inserts With Your Hair Color, and You're Good to Go.

The Bumpits come in clear, blonde, and brown colors. Of course it doesn't have to match your exact hair color. I actually used a dark Bumpit on my friend's blonde hair. She has thick and curly hair, so it didn't matter which color I used. It was not going to show through. On thinner hair, it is probably a little more important. But, if you poof your hair above the teeth and spray, it will still be fine.

I hope this helps if you were trying to make a decision on whether or not to invest the $10.00 it takes to buy the Bumpits for your hair. It was the best $10.00 I ever spent on my hair.

I'm glad I found this information. I was considering purchasing a couple of these a while back after seeing an advertisement. I have the same problem with my hair being very thin and I need that lift on top at the crown. I've been through several hairdressers and finally found one who enjoys working with me. However, even when she texturizes my hair and layers it just right, I sometimes still have the problem of 'lift'. I think I'll try these doo-dads. Thanks for the info.

Yes, with thin hair, it is a little bit trickier to make the bumpits work. But they do work! I read some bad reviews about these from people with thin hair, and my guess is they didnt pull the hair up a little bit away from the teeth, and spray it. I have no problems with these, and I wear them EVERYDAY. I feel naked without them, and I get compliments all of the time on my "thick hair". HAHA I'm not only dealing with the thin hair, little do they know I have the bald spot to go right along with it! I love them!!

Wow! I'd never heard of bumpits before. What an incredibly simple but wonderful idea. I've simply got to have one. Thanks for the article. Very interesting.

Having fine hair myself, I've been wondering about the Bumpits. I agree they really dress up a plain ponytail and give it a whole new look. I might just have to try one and see how I like it. I do wonder if they feel heavy at all or tend to slip. My hair is so fine even the banana clips come loose after a few hours unless I *really* make them tight. Thanks for the very well written hub!

My hair is really fine too, and scrunching it up to be curly really helps. Also- I bobby pin the bumpit down to my hair, and it has never slipped. Thanks for the comment!
