Bunk beds have been popular since quite a long time ago, and they remain as such today, and maybe to even a greater extent. Their popularity is due to the wonderful ability to save space along with providing good comfortable sleeping (and bringing much joy to the kids!). Yet they have one issue that sometimes worries the parents - that the child's safety is at risk when he or she sleeps on top bunk and climb there through the bunk bed ladder.

When you buy a bunk bed, there should be a ladder included in the package, since a bunk bed is never complete without it. Moreover, the ladder should be of proper length and number of steps should ideally fit the bed you purchased. Double bunk beds have ladders with 3-6 steps, and for the triple ones 6-12 steps ladders will be required.

Actually the ladder inclusion is not a problem, because many beds come with it in one package. But another concern is that the ladder must be sturdy enough to hold your or your kids' weight. Good ladder especially if permanently attached should not move around.

If you purchase the bunk bed ladder separately, you should know how to place a ladder on a bunk bed. Usually ladders are either on the sides or front of the bed. When the ladder is in front which means it is on the long side of the bed that usually faces out from the wall, it will best fit bunk beds with four feet or four posts touching the ground.

If the bunk bed has a solid foundation on both ends, ladders should be on the short "ends" of the bed, because if a child fall down from a vertical ladder which is placed on front side, he or she can land on the bottom bunk rails or get an appendage caught in the bed. However this usually will not happen with the angled ladders, because a child will not fall straight down.

Actually you can replace your current ladder with a sturdier and safer one, if you feel not satisfied with its safety properties, as in the case of movable ladders. If the ladder is detachable, it is usually less sturdy than the permanent ladders, but you can get an incorporated bolts and screws to make the ladder firmer in its position.

Actually there is nothing wrong in movable ladders and you can choose either them or permanent ladders. The latter are attached to the bunk bed with bolts, screws, or nails and can extend from the top of the bed to the ground, or to the bottom of the bed. You need to make sure that your permanent ladder is placed in such a way that your kid can easily access it. Also it is better when the ladder is made from the same material as the bed itself. You have to make sure it is properly attached to the bed before your child climb on it.

The movable ladder can be put aside when not in use which is very practical if your room is small, though it is not as stable as the permanent ladders are. Movable ladders can have wheels or can be foldable which makes them easy to move and easy to storage in closets or under the bottom bed. Of course, the wheels should have a locking mechanism to prevent rolling off when somebody climbs on top bunk. The same goes to foldable ladders - the must also have some locking mechanism.

Since the most important thing about ladders is their safety, when you plan to buy bunk bed ladder, keep in mind that it must provide the said safety to the most degree. When you purchase a new ladder or replace the old one, you need to make sure it answers your needs an all points and the safety especially. Regularly check the bolts and screws the ladder is attached with to the bunk bed, or/and the locking mechanism, if you use a movable ladder.
