Bunny Breed Guide: Rex Rabbits
83Mini Rex Babies
Rex rabbits come in two main types, Mini Rex, and the standard Rex. I will deal with each type seperately so as to avoid confusion.
Rex Rabbits
The standard Rex has a beautiful velvety fur that is popular in the fur trade (not something I recommend or support, this is merely a note for accuracy). Fortunately for the Rex rabbit, it is easier for those involved in the fur trade to take fur from larger animals, so since the mid 1980's Rex's have rarely been used for fur whatsoever. Rex rabbits were also quite often used for meat, but this is less common nowadays, with Flemish Giants being a more popular source of rabbit meat due to their larger size.
A standard rex generally weighs between seven and eleven pounds, and comes in a wide range of colors. Breeders have gained great enjoyment in breeding many different color types of Rex, and today Rexs come in: Blue, Black, Amber, Chocolate, Lilac, Sable, Opal, Red, and White solid colors, and in the following marking styles, Broken, Californian, Castor, Chinchilla, Black Otter. Their ears stand upright, and the coat requires very little grooming.
The Rex temperament is very solid and good natured, and they are known to be very maternal creatures, often accepting the young of other rabbits and raising them as their own. They are relatively calm rabbits, though they are still Rabbits, and will not do particularly well in chaotic situations.
Mini Rex Rabbits
Mini Rex Rabbits are essentially just smaller versons of the Rex rabbit, weighing in at around three to five pounds. They possess the same gorgeous fur coats, and are also friendly, although they do tend to be slightly more active than their larger cousins. I would recommend a full sized Rex if you are considering a pet for children, as they are likely to be more laid back in personality, and less fragile than the Mini Rex. Minin Rex are however, very popular with adults and children alike.
General Notes
Both the standard Rex and the Mini Rex make excellent house rabbits, that is rabbits that live inside. They are relatively easily toilet trained, and will enjoy the company of humans and other animals if introduced in a non threatening way. Their easy care coats put them ahead of some other fluffy rabbit breeds as suitable pets for children and busy adults, and they feel beautiful to stroke. Rex rabbits tend to enjoy human company, and are often described as being more catlike than anything in their personality, happily laying around in their favorite spots before suddenly dashing up and binkying around with joy.

Litter trainng a mini rex...has become a challenge. We have a mini rex, she is now a member of our family for two weeks. She is full of personality and is so loveable...but the potty training is about to drive us crazy. She choose's to use our sofa's (we have 2) as her litter box. Can anyone help? We have a litter box in her cage which is always readily available for her at any given time.

I have a little baby Rex rabbit i got my rabbit just under two days ago i am not sure if my rabbit is a girl or a boy because it is only eight weeks old and is to young to tell. We named my rabbit Milo because of the chocolate brown colour of the fur. Milo is a beautiful rex rabbit and is calm and so soft to hold. Milo is no bigger than my hand. I suggest rex rabbits to anyone that wants a loving calm soft and active rabbit. Caitie

I have 2 very beautiful mini Trex's...My male is lilac and my female is light brown. If anyone is interested in adopting when my female has her litter just email me at brandicreamer@gmail.com.
I have to standard rex's. Smores and Milly. They are amazing animals but are meant to be outside in the barn with the rest of the animals for company. now how would you feel if your little baby rabbit was all alone inside while you were living it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For those experiencing litter training issues, my first suggestion is to immediately run, don't walk, to the vet and as soon as the rabbit is old enough, have him or her neutered or spayed. This is CRITICAL. It will improve your litter training 100% and will improve the health and behavior of the rabbit. Female rabbits have an over 50% chance of developing reproductive cancers and both male and female rabbits will mark their territories with urine if not altered. Male and female rabbits will live longer, healthier lives and your life will be much less stressfull.

to those who have a problem litter training mini rex:
Mine took a while, but I figured it out. Rabbits are not stupid. They're actually really smart. If you provide what he/she needs in a proximity that he/she can get to without getting too excited and perhaps "missing" the box or even just deciding to make the couch or bed a box of their own, then it should work. I have a HUGE cage for my rabbit. We simply, bought him a cat litter box (way bigger and easier for them to turn around in) and filled it with hay. If he would slip up, we'd put him in his box and lock the cage for a while. And continue. Put your rabbit in the cage whenever you're not right there with him/her until they get the hint. I know they will. It really just takes time.
As I rabbit owner I would recommend to following to make the process easier: get a smaller cat box instead of a corner one, get a cage big enough for a box to fit, use only hay in the box, spend time with the rabbit and make sure you don't leave him/her alone before knowing to use the box!
hope this helps
i have 2 mini rex bunnies male one constantly chases and bites the other what can i do
Barney separate them. They could fatally hurt each other. Some bunnies like companionship others don't. They could also be the same sex which would be the reason the one chases and bites the other. Females will also kill the male if they are housed together. SEPARATE! Also check out Bunniez other hubs. She has a lot of very useful info here!
i have two male mini rex bunnies around 5 months old one keeps chasing the other one and biteing him the poor thing has been bitten on several occasions but most recently very close to his eye.
Both bunnies were bought at the same time i think from the same litter i dont have the room to keep them seperated and i am at a loss of what to do PLEASE HELP.
The one that bites has a tatoo in his her of numbers and letters what does this mean? the bunnies were bought through a 4-H Club and we werent given any info on them or about them.
To cathleen:
I have the same issue. two females, tried to indroduce them in March. They were ripping eachother's fur out & biting instantly. The vet I went to suggested getting them fixed spent the money on that. Waited until their hormones leveled out and they still "hate" eachother months later. So I have bought a divided hutch and just have to alternate playtimes for them. I guess sometimes they just dont get along. I am tired of trying to introduce them I have scars on my arms from where I have gotten caught in the cross-fire of their fights. Good luck.
iam pretty sure that my rabbit is a rex but he does not weigh 7 to 11 pounds
to anyone one with litter traing problems:
i have discovered recently a few things that should help, first lay hey of bedding in their litter box then you should take some of their droppings and put them in the litter box so that the rabbit understands what it is supposed to be used for next stay with them if they go in where else stop them put them in their cage with the litter box, lastly be patient
hope that helps
'first lay hay or bedding'
'if they go anywhere else'
'in their cage(with the litter box)'
we've just had our first rex, can anybody tell me what is there favorite thing to eat is there anything paticular this breed loves to eat
I think Rex rabbit are so cute like my rabbit Thumper.
