Surreal Celebration in the Desert

The Burning Man Ceremony is not until the last week in August, The Tickets are not cheap? Tickets are $280 and $300 if they are still available! The festivity is held on the dusty Playa of the Black Rock Desert, the largest flat spot on the planet, a hundred miles north of Reno Nevada in the basin of the primeval Lake Lahonton, It has grown astronomically. So much so, that the festival originally held on the Lake bed has now been moved to the privately owned Fly Ranch so that it may be more easily controlled. Tickets may be bought on line but are disappearing fast! If you are tempted to attend this fantastic event of unbridled pleasure, book now!

The clothing optional, fun in the sun is now an art festival with amazing sculptures set up on the sandy lake bed. People come from all over the world to party and display their art (and some their bodies, though body paint rules). Vehicles are not permitted except for essential supplies and the Jonny on the spot wagon. Bicycles prevail in many diverse forms. Participants must be totally self sufficient and leave no trace. Fires are only allowed on special platforms so that the Playa is not scarred. It is easy to spot participants as they return home as their vehicles are barely recognizable through the rime of dust

Fantastic art is constructed on the Playa and displayed for the week then the Playa is cleared so that no trace remains. Jugglers, stilt walkers, unicyclists and singers perform for the wild week of partying. On Saturday night the wooden effigy is burnt This was 8 ft high for the first man in 1986 but in 2008 it was 84 feet high. The theme for 2009 is Evolution. Music plays a big part in the festival with impromptu concerts Jazz, disco and even ballet. Classes are held for all sorts of pastimes, drawing, massage, meditation. You name it, it goes on.

Who wouldn't want to go just once in a life time? Many people buy RV s just for the occasion. Tent camping is all very well but the playa sometimes suffers blinding sand storms and being in an RV is much more comfortable. Apart from the occasional glitch, like the man being set alight early, every one has a wonderful, never to be forgotten time. And, like Las Vegas, what happens at Burning Man stays in burning Man! Enough said.

It does look interesting, but I am saddened to hear that they are even charging for it, let alone so much. Didn't used to be a form of free expression? Still, love your article and the included pictures, I finally got an overview of what it is, and that is nicely done!
