Burning carbohydrates
65How the body burns fuel
Certain contaminants will cause our bodies to stop running, the same as contaminated fuel in a gas tank can cause problems. Until gas prices skyrocketed, I sporadically put the more expensive gas in. I always hated the stress I went through each time I had to pump gas. Which one today? Have I put enough “better” fuel in it lately, or has it been a while? How much money do I have? Oh, the aggravation of making that decision! Usually, I decided to allow a few contaminants in my gas, and spend the “saved” money on a Diet Coke.
The body burns food for energy. But just like gas, it burns on three types: carbohydrates, protein, or fat. In the past, some doctors discovered that if you cut back on carbohydrates, you would lose weight. So they went wild with it. They eradicated carbohydrates from diets, recommending high-protein diets.
To understand why this is unhealthy, you have to understand the mechanics of how your body uses carbohydrates. They’re the easiest thing for your body to burn. They burn quickly, but not efficiently; there’s often leftover fuel, which remains stored in the body. The body’s “gas tank” is its fat cells. The unused fuel is stored as fat, to be used in case of emergency shortages.
