BusinessObjects revolves around the concept of the Universe. A Universe is a cut-down version of a relational database. The Universe is a semantic layer that contains metadata (data about data) which allows
  • to translate the complexities of the database into business-friendly terms for end-users.
  • correct SQL generation
  • manipulation of data based on the metadata and on the additional business logic in the Universe
Each Universe is constructed with a set of Objects and Classes of Object.

Universe file

A Universe file contains:

- Connection parameters for one or more database middleware.

- Objects grouped into classes seen by the users.

- Schema of the tables and joins used in the database from which objects are built.

All the Universe Definitions and Reports are physically stored on the file system.

For Designers, exporting universe is pretty much instantaneous. For users, publishing and accessing corporate documents is as fast as saving them to disk.

Saving a universe under a new name

If you want to save a universe under a new name, you must click the Universes button that appears in the Save As dialog box before you save the universe. This ensures that the universe is saved in the Universes folder at the root of your user profile file path. If the universe is not saved in this directory, any list of values associated with the universe may be lost when you export the universe to the repository. In certain cases a universe that does not have its list of values may not function correctly.

When you save a universe under a new name you must use this procedure:

1 Select File > Save As

2 Click the Universes button that appears to the left of the Save As dialog box.

3 Type the new name and click Save.
