Butter or Margarine - which one is better for my health?
51Butter vs Margarine
The easy answer is that Butter is healthier for you. Seriously, don't start screaming that spreads are better THEY ARE NOT!!!
So why is butter healthier? Well it's very simple, as a species we have been eating butter for centuries, and our bodies, and most importantly our liver has evolved to be able to absorb butter and to use what is in it.
With margarines and spreads, our bodies are not quiet so sure what needs to be done with them, so our livers treat them like they are poison, and they actually create cholesterol, despite the claims that they don't.
The fats in margarines and spreads (including those so called healthy spreads) are not natural to our systems, and it will probably take centuries before our bodies (if ever) adapt to them. Whereas butter has much more natural content and although it does have a fat content, and should be taken in moderation, it is more natural to our digestive systems, and the liver is not put under the same strain dealing with butter as it is dealing with margarine.
So put simply butter is always going to beat margarine because we are genetically predisposed to deal with butter.
FYI, your liver is one of the most important organs in your digestive system, it doesn't just deal with poisons as people seem to think, it plays a far bigger part than that.
Just as a quick side note to this, oils are always going to be better, and if you are going to cook, try and use and oil with a high flash point. Olive Oil is no good for this, it has a low flash point, so when you got to cook with it, and you heat it up, you will destroy all of the good fats. Putting olive oil on bread instead of butter or margarine will be a good healthy option.

This subject is one of my favorite rants...GRRRR! You have done a wonderful job of explaining a very complex subject. Complex? The studies out there are, IMHO, biased and the truth is apparantly sublimated. Thank you for agreeing with me.....LOL! er..I agree with you!

Great hub, It is ironic that a lot of our current "medical Knowledge" was learned from times when man first started to "remake" everything. All animal fats are evil comes from a time when some very toxic chemicals became required for meat processing, so now all animal fat is bad for you. A huge economy was built making food "safer" for us and now that we have found this to be not true, it is an up hill battle to change preceptions.
