One of the most beautiful creatures on this Earth is the butterfly. Flowing through the air with just a slight flap of its wings, it comes from the humble beginnings as a small caterpillar to emerge a short time later as a wonderful creation. It is a vibrant creature full of color and life; just watching them seems to calm the day.

The butterfly also has great meaning, from the ancient Asian cultures to today; the butterfly can represent very inspiriting thoughts and reflections on life. There is a certain respect for this creation; maybe its mysterious life cycle keeps us intrigued with it or maybe our own desire to have true freedom in this life. Whatever the case may be the result of all this is the butterfly tattoo is one of the most popular styles of tattoos that people get and this butterfly tattoos hub will review allot of different featuires of it.

Why did I get this tattoo?

The meanings of the butterfly tattoo differ from one person to the next, the most common meaning is renewing of life. A butterfly’s life cycle is broken up into 4 stages (egg, larva, pupa, and adult) and once it is completed the transformation then reveals a beautiful flying creature.

So this type of tattoo this may then be suitable for a young person coming into adolescence or going to adulthood. Whatever the case, the butterfly tattoo is a great expression of life and the renewing of your life.

While the butterfly looks beautiful and lovely, the development to get there is very chaotic and challenging. Because of the harshness of the weather, other insects or creatures attack, not all caterpillars turn into butterflies so, the butterfly tattoo can also have a meaning of moving from a troublesome time in life to a time of peace.

Life can hand you seasons that are much like the life of a butterfly and so this might be a great tattoo to get if you are coming out of something related.

Well, sometimes there might not be any significance or meaning attached to what a butterfly tattoo is. Butterflies are pretty creatures and that might be all reason someone wants to get one. In the search for meaning behind everything, the funny thing is, things aren’t always as deep as we try to make them.

Lupus is a non-contagious autoimmune disease that affects the body’s ability to know whether it should be fighting against good or bad agents in the body. Over time the purple butterfly tattoo has come to represent this fight.

Freedom is a powerful thing that few individuals truly appreciate, unless of course you have lived without it. Whether you have been captive physically or captive to another person’s power over you, freedom is that dream you hope.

The butterfly has come to represent this for some; freedom. The butterfly is free to fly where it wishes, it is not mastered by another, and the butterfly is only concerned with feeding itself in the day. If you have been in an abusing relationship or feel a connection with those words, a butterfly tattoo would be a great choice.

Some other meaning for why people get butterfly tatoos are: the Mayan belief that the spirits disguise themselves as they make their return to Earth; just as the butterfly disguises itself in the form of caterpillar only to appear one day as something different. Also, some attribute the butterfly with the Neovaue period which strongly opposed the industrialization of the world. That period was formed around the idea that man came from nature and should; as much as he could, return back to it.

You could, as you wish, come up with as many other meanings for why people get or why you got a butterfly tattoo (it would be great to hear) but, whatever the reason you want it to simply be who you are. Get a tattoo that represents the situation, event or life you are.

Butterfly Tattoo Designs

I wanted to start this Hub out by going over why people get a butterfly tattoo. I did this, number one because a tattoo is a deeply personal thing for many people and number two because of that personal connection the meaning of the tattoo is strongly linked to the design.

If you are looking for something that expresses you, the excited and outgoing person you are, full of life, you might want to get a large tattoo on the center of your back, arching over your shoulder blades as if you are going to take flight. Or maybe, life has been real hard lately and you want to express the hope for a new light coming, so a small butterfly on your ankle might be just the reminder enough for you.

The meaning dictates the design and there are thousands upon thousands of different tattoos of butterflies. So, with so many choices its best to start by narrowing your choices down through the meaning, location, size, color and number of butterflies. Doing this will help your artist suggest the best ones for you.

Common designs: Lower back, ankle,Celtic, organic or tribal butterfly tattoos
