Earl Grey is a famous premium tea blend with a distinctive flavour and aroma, both of which can be attributed to the addition of an oil extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange. Earl Grey is named after the 2nd Earl Grey, the British Prime Minister throughout the 1830's, who is believed to have received diplomatic gift of tea flavoured with this bergamot orange. Another theory or legend is that a Chinese Mandarin presented the tea to the Earl in 1803 after his son was saved from drowning by one of the Earl's men. Jackson's of Piccadilly claim that they originated the tea in 1830 after Earl Grey passed the recipe to George Charlton, a founding partner of Jackson & Co. According to Jackson's the original recipe has been in constant production ever since that year. Of course, Earl Grey has always traditionally been consumed in loose leaf form and not in teabag form, and the genuine article is a black tea, this article will talk you through the finest decaffeinated Earl Grey Teas and not Black Earl Grey Loose Teas or Black Earl Grey Tea Bags. Other modern varieties on the recipe include Earl Grey Green Tea.

Twinings Earl Grey Decaf Tea Bags

If you have read my other hubs then you probably don't need me to tell you how great Twinings is any more. If a tea has 'Twinings' on the box then it is a quality products, as simply as. I have actually had a lot of trouble finding quality Earl Grey Decaf on the American market, but I have tried my hardest! Put simply, this is your best bet for a Decaf tea which has retained all of the taste of a caffienated Black Earl Grey Tea. They don't work out as cheap as the normal version, but that probably has something to do with the much smaller market - remember that these are being shipped over from England by small importers. Anyway, enough said, Twinings is the best.

Stash Premium Decaf Earl Grey

If you really cannot do with normal Earl Grey, and for some reason would like to buy American, then the Stash Decaf Earl Grey is pretty good. That said, they are asking a pretty hefty price for this product - in fact they are asking for more money per tea bag than it would cost you to buy the Twinings product. Irrespective of whether you choose to believe that English are better at producing teas, and sorry guys but this is one of the few things that we kick your ass at, I guess that you need to ask yourself why Stash (produced in Oregan) is more expensive than a product that has been shipped across the Atlantic. The answer is simple, Twinings is simply better value for money in this instance. All of that said, Stash is still a good cup of tea for those that are not too fussed about authenticity.

Davidson's Tea Bulk Decaf Earl Grey (Loose)

This product used to be awful, and everybody knew it. It just did not taste like Earl Grey, like many American products if I am honest. I have to give credit where it is due, I have heard a lot about improvements to the Davidson's product range - this tea included. I am featuring Davidson's for those that like a loose tea, as the most authentic loose decaf Earl Grey available on the American market. If you are buying caffeinated loose tea, then I recommend that you head over to my relevant hub, and should avoid Davidson's in that scenario. It's just still not as good as English loose tea. But if you really want to buy it, and you have decaf, then this is the only logical choice.

Earl Grey in the News

  • Lesser lights under the Grey Cup radarToronto Star30 hours ago

As always, the usual suspects – the quarterbacks, running backs and star receivers – will play a big role in today's Grey Cup game. But, as is often the case, some of the lesser lights could play a huge part in determining who gets to drink from Earl Grey's mug. Here's a look at six who could make a difference.

Lol, I never went anywhere Irohner. I was trying to post on that lovely forum thread, but they banned my other login too. I will be back. I just feel a little hard done by, I missed out on being able to tell everybody about my 200th fan.... and it's hard sitting there watching that crazy freak provoke further confrontation all day every day. Anyway, see you in a couple of days ;)
