Fishing can become an expensive sport over the years.  Testing out lures, rods, reels and adopting different methods of fishing such as fly fishing, lake fishing, open water fishing and offshore fishing start to cost a fortune after a while.

A brand new baitrunner or fly wheel can cost upwards around $300.00 easy so when trying out a new type of fishing I would think that buying a discounted reel or rod would be more practical to start.  Often it is cheaper to buy the rods and reels separate so that you can change out the reel or rod depending on what kind of fishing you are doing.

For instance.  I wouldn't necessarily use a triple titanium graphite, light weight rod that cost $250.00 just to go trout fishing.  You could just as effectively pick up a cheap rod and reel at Walmart for $20.00 and get the same results.  But I would use a triple titanium graphite rod and fly wheel or bait runner fishing offshore for larger fish such as tuna or dorado because they put up a good fight, they are stronger fish and with all the effort you put into trying to catch it, the last thing you want is for your rod to break or your test line to snap.

So buying a good rod and reel is important to fishing but you don't have to pay $250.00 for a rod if you are going fishing in a lake for trout. Trout don't generally get that big... though I have seen some big ass trout and experienced fisherman have been known to catch these anomalies using 5lb. test line. It takes practice and a little bit of caress to make it happen.

In anycase, it's good to have a bunch of different test lines, different types of lures such as top water plugs or squids in your tackle box so you don't end up losing the catch of a life time. I made this mistake last summer. I know I must have had a fifty pound yellow tail hooked and I played it for what it was worth. I nearly fell off the aft of the boat (luckily I had my boyfriend there with me to catch me) trying to reel her in.

It was the most exciting hook I ever had. We fought a good 20 minutes or so. I can't really remember because my heart was pumping and everything seemed to fly by fast. Anyways, I wasn't anticipating catching a big tuna ten miles off the coast of LaJolla Shores so I used the same test line I always use which was a 15lb. test line when I should have used a 30.

So I got her up to the boat after chasing her down all around the boat. Bringing her in, giving her slack, trying to wear her out. My rod was nearly in the water when I finally got her up to the boat. Just my luck though, my line had gotten tangled up in my the bait runner, mostly my fault for trying to loosen the tension so she could run some more because she was still feisty as could be (no I am not the smartest fisherman in the world) so when I flipped up the runner to loosen the tension, the line snapped and she got away.

It was my great defeat that I could have won if only I had been better prepared, plus I wasn't exactly thinking straight with all the excitement. Anyways, the point is you need to be prepared and I wasn't exactly prepared when I decided to go offshore to fish for yellow tail not believing that I would actually hook a fat one.

Don't let this happen to you! Fishing can be really expensive so the best place to buy fishing equipment is online so you can get it at a discounted price.
