So you think you'd like to trade in those Lucky's and buy an electronic cigarette? Whether you are wanting to give up tobacco, or maybe just looking for an alternative to running outside everytime you want to smoke, the electronic cigarette is a great option to have. Unlike patches or gum, it really allows the smoker to have more control over the nicotine consumed at any given time.

But before you make a purchase, there are some things you may want to consider. Not all of these devices are made the same, and their different parts may affect your choice. 

The electronic cigarette is fueled by it's batteries. The battery size can vary depending on the style you get. The mini electronic cigarette for example is very close to the size of a regular cigarette. While the smoker may want to look like he's holding something authentic in his hand, the shortness of the battery means it will not last as long before needing a new charge.

A pen style lenght on the other hand is longer like a pen and can go 3-4 days before needing a new charge. This can be more convenient, especially if you are traveling.

At the end of the battery is an indicator light which glows as the smoker inhales on the device. In the beginning, most companies used an led that glowed in an orange color. To someone just a couple of feet away, this looks very convincing. While it seems like a smart choice to maintain the the authenticity, it is sometimes too authentic. The eventual problem which may arise from this is the prevention of some establishments to allow e-smokers to use the ecigs.

The great thing about the electronic smoking devices is that the flame does not have to be orange. Manufacturers have now made available an assortment of colors including green, purple, and pink. Before you buy electronic cigarette batteries, you may want to consider where you are going to be using the device. You may want to opt for a color flame for some fun style and usability in more places. 

The atomizer is essentially the engine of the electric cigarette. It boils  and steams the contents of the cartridge. This is the most expensive part of the device, and the quality is something you pay for.

Cheaper brands may be great for trying the device initially, but should you decide it is something you want to continue with you may want to purchase from a company which offers a long term warrantee on parts. Some offer a month while others are willing to replace parts for a year.

Again, the size of the unit you decide to purchase will determine the size of the atomizer. Companies are working more and more to decrease the size of the atomizer.

One issue is that the atomizer can heat up with over use, and so a smaller unit may be more prone to breakage. Again, if you are looking for long term usage you may want to consider purchasing a product with a long term warranty. 

Not ony does the indicator light come in a variety of colors, but so do the electronic cigarettes themselves. White is common and often has a cigarette paper look as well.

If you shop around, you can find many other colors such a burgundy, black, brown and silver.

A few companies have begun making multi colored electronic cigarettes which if you own several of these models may be fun to coordinate with your wardrobe.

And some specialty places now will custom paint one for you. This can allow you to add a monogram or your company name. If you are considering to buy an electronic cigarette for a friend, this can add a really special touch. 

Depending on the brand you choose, you will have an option for different types of chargers.

A normal wall plug unit is standard, but be sure to check when ordering from other countries that your plug will be friendly with your power sources.

Some chargers are reliant on a USB connection and can only be charged by plugging into your computer or a USB hub.

The other alternative is to purchase a completely disposable unit. These come with a fully charged battery, but should you perhaps get an older unit you may be disappointed when you don't get the power you desire for the best effect. 

In addition to where you live affecting the type of charger you purchase, it can affect your over all choice on where to purchase from.

Some countries not only have bans on regular smoking, but have extended their bans on the electronic cigarette as well.

Ordering from a company outside your country can cause headaches and hassles in customs. For example, if you live in the United States and order from outside of the US you could be waiting 4-6 weeks for your purchase. You could get it only to realize you don't like it and you will be unable to return it. And in some cases people have reported ordering and never even getting their product and unable to get back their money spent.

If it is possible for you to order within your own country this is highly recommended. If these are not available where you live, be sure to check your local laws and regulations to make sure the units are even legal for you to have. 

Finally, when you want to buy electronic cigarette cartridges, you will be reliant on the company you decided on for your unit.

The cartridges come in a variety of strengths, flavors, and sizes. You may be pleasantly suprised when you realize you are not restricted to just regular tobacco flavor or menthol. There are flavors such as vanilla, cherry, strawberry, apple, and more that may change the way you enjoy smoking with an electronic device.

Be sure to check with a company and get their specifications on how strong a cartrige is and how it compares to your current brand of cigarette. For example, a light cartridge for one company could in reality be the equivalent of a pack of ultra light cigarettes.

Not all the cartridges fit in all units as they all vary by manufacturer. In addition, the amount of substance in the cartridges will vary as well. You could order from 2 different companies, pay the same amount for a cartridge, but one cartridge will be the same value as one pack of cigarettes while the other may give you the amount of two. 

Not all electronic cigarettes are the same and it can be a much bigger choice than what you may have initially thought. Examine all the companies and their offerings. Don't disregard a brand that may be slightly more if it offers great protection for your investment and good customer service.

Keep in mind you will have to buy electronic cigarette accessories from the company that you bought your initial unit from.
