The Amazon Kindle reading device is more than just the latest gadget. Despite what some of their detractors may argue, the Kindle is quickly becoming part of our everyday life and it's on its way to turn into a cultural icon.

In my opinion, there are two reasons for such a bright future:

First: It's the most revolutionary way to access written content since Gutemberg's famous invention. And what's more, it carries in itself the seed of modern times and new technology: an inherent capacity to evolve quickly, to embrace essential changes in relatively short periods of time.

Second: Its wireless conectivity gives room to future integration with other devices through the web. Think about it for a while. There are really no limits for this and it is in my opinion - and many others' - the way of the future.

Reading from the Amazon Kindle is definitely a unique experience. Unfortunately, it's also an intrasferable one.

Nonetheless, I'll try to give you a brief review on the main features of the Kindle book e-reader from the user's point of view. I'll try and make justice to its incredible capabilities and I'll also point a couple of features that still need some improvement. Hope this review is useful to those of you who may still be on the fence regarding the possibility of buying the Kindle.

First of all, once you finally have the Kindle in your hands, it just "feels right". Its size and looks remind you more of those of a book's than a "gadget's". It's not some tiny little device that's been designed to dazzle you with a small screen and a few gizmos. Rather it is trustworthy companion that will remain in the back while your eyes and mind gently meet the story you were looking for. And that's how it was supposed to be.

True, there are a couple of buttons on the side whose position should be reconsidered for future editions - more on this in a future article - but it's nothing that will become an obstacle for a second time reader.

Now, one of the most common fears particularly amongst internet savvy users when facing the possibility of buying the Amazon Kindle: Its readability.

Well, if you're one of them, I just have two - or three ?- words for you: Don't worry. When reading from the amazon Kindle screen, you'll soon realize it's not like reading from a computer monitor. The Kindle's screen doesn't have the usual brightness you find in other electronic devices, and it's been especially designed not to tire your eyes. I've personally read for over two hours straight from the Kindle on several occassions and it feels almost the same as reading from a book.

On another issue, one of the strongest points of the Amazon Kindle is the fact that you can wirelessly connect with the Amazon store and download any book you wish at the moment. You can even access certain blogs for a small fee, but this is something you can do for free with a regular internet connection, so I don't believe many people care too much about this function.

All in all, the Amazon Kindle is an extremely portable and functional reading device and, with a 48 hour battery life, it becomes very pleasurable to carry around.

Reports on the new Kindle 2.0 coming for christmas 2008 have been around for a while now. However, Amazon.com officials themselves repeatedly said this was far from the truth. when we were almost convinced this was in fact the case, the photo above surfaced, ilustrating reports on the arrival of the much awaited Kindle e-reader version 2.

As you can see in the photo above, the new device seems to be a little thinner, the screen a bit larger and the position of some buttons has changed. The overall shape, the size and general look remain the same, nonetheless. At least to me. The color is also very similar, although the back seems to be made of metal.

One of the changes that may make some people happy is that the Kindle 2 comes with a leather pouch, which appears to many as more appealing than the older protective case. Not to me, though. I'll choose safety over looks anytime when it comes to electronic devices. Finally, the Kindle 2 may be charged with a miniUSB cable.

And what about the price?. That's the queston, isn't it?

Well, it's been suggested that Kindle 2's price may be a little cheaper: around $300. In this economy that would help spread the fire, that's for sure.

So, should you buy your kindle now or wait till version 2 is released? Well, that's up to you. Fact is Kindle 2 is still nowhere to be seen and we don't know how long this situation will last.

Will there be updates on the Amazon Kindle reader? You bet. The point is: are you strong enough to wait on rumors?
