No one should have to live without great coffee just because we're still slogging through a major recession.

If you buy coffee in bulk and look for great discounts and free shipping, you can make your own fantastic coffee without paying $4 to $6 a cup for it.

If it makes you feel better, you can always buy one of those Mermaid logo mugs to tote it around in, and no one will be the wiser.

Hell, you could be carrying Koolaide around in that thing!

It's your business and nobody else's.

I've used Amazon's grocery and gourmet food section before with good results. It can work out well if you 1) buy only things you know you actually like, and 2) watch for "Super Saver Shipping" next to the price of the item you are buying.

"Super Saver Shipping" means that on that specific item, shipping is free within the continental United States. When you're buying in bulk, free shipping is a big deal.

I mean, you don't even get that deal driving to Sam's Club--You have to pay for your gas and your Sam's Club membership when you buy at Sam's Club.

Plus, Sam's Club is evil and weird. Don't buy at Sam's Club!

I bought a case of 'Go-Go Rice' bowls at Amazon, and they were damn good. And cheap too.

Ate 'em for about a month before they ran out.

(Those bulk boxes do have bottoms in them. It's not all wine and roses you know.)

How to Cheat at Espresso

I love lattes, but at the Mermaid place they cost more than I really should even spend on lunch.

You don't have to have an espresso machine however to make a fairly good approximation of a latte at home.

Here's what I do:

  1. Heat a cup of whole milk with a little cream on top of the stove until just before it scalds. ('Scalding' is when the milk gets that little skin on top, yuck. So basically, you want it real hot but not so hot it grows a skin.)
  2. Brew a cup of very strong flavored or Columbian coffee.
  3. Pour half a cup of the coffee in a lidded cup and pour the hot milk/cream mixture on top.
  4. Shake well.
  5. Pour into your 'to go' cup and go.

What you end up with is really just 'cafe au lait', but it's pretty good and close enough for jazz--at least until you save enough pennies for that espresso maker.

(BTW You can buy those at Amazon too.)

Add some flavored Italian syrup if you like that sort of thing (I don't!) and leave your house five bucks richer than you'd be if you drove through anyplace on the way to work.

If you don't actually like flavored Italian syrups (I don't!), you can always buy half a dozen bottles and just keep them prominently displayed on your counter to make yourself look continental when guests come over.

Keep them lined up right underneath that Absinthe poster in the fake barnwood frame you just picked up a Kohls.

That'll be right purdy even if it don't taste good.

Yes I've Gone Over to the Dark Side

I've been getting so many emails from fellow hubbers who say, "Honestly Pam, you should write commercial hubs too," that I've decided to cave in and give it a shot while I'm in between freelance gigs. Seriously, it's getting ugly out there work-wise. (Getting?)

I'm going to try hawking stuff for a week or two and see how it goes.

But only stuff I really like myself. Seriously. (Not counting the syrups.)

Those of you are used to me writing about real life (well, coffee is real life, but you know what I mean), please feel free to skip these. I'll still write 'normal' hubs too, I'm just expanding my repertoire (a.k.a. 'selling out': the internet version of Disco).

If it works out I promise to come back and write a hub about it so you can sell out too!

Excellent hub. I'm glad you came over to the dark side. Well, I don't hawk that much stuff but I think I'm going to start :)

Great idea about the coffee. Tim Horton's (a big coffee shop here in Canada) just raised their prices.

Hi Uninvited Writer! Thanks so much for dropping by and forgiving me! lol! I don't know if it will work out. Nelle Hoxie and Mark Knowles do really well with Amazon, but I think they're both more web-savvy than me. I'm gonna give it a shot. Let me know how it works out for you. :)

I knew you'd sell out Pam! Shame on you for telling us lackeys! ROFL That's good to hear Pam! Maybe when you make da BIG BUCKS, you can treat yourself once in a blue moon a $8 cup of sweetened mud! CAPITALISTS RULE!!!

That's really good to hear Pam, seriously. I'm sure you'll blow them away! By the way, have you published any ezine articles? I just got word yesterday that I got accepted (Harry Potter article) and now I'm kind of a BIG DEAL as my status there is "Expert Author." But don't break out the champagne and bong just yet...I got a lot more work to do still. Thanks Pam!

Hi dohn! No I haven't tried the article directories yet or ezines. I can see I'm going to have to branch out A LOT if I expect to buy that $8 sweetened mud you allude to! lol! Seriously, I'm trying some things, and I do come back and share when things work, so that takes a little bit of the guilt away.

I guess poverty makes capitalists of us all! Thanks for making me laugh! :)

Good Hub! I should mention one of the great bargains of great coffee of all time is Community Coffee. It's French roast with chicory and it's what they use for the Cafe au Lait at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, which is where I got hooked on it. Actually there's a Cafe du Monde brand of it too, but Community is lots cheaper and it's what N'yawlins natives drink, tourists buy the CDM brand and pay a bit more for it.

Fix it like that and put a dash of powdered sugar on it, get some beignet mix and fry up some of those with a shake of powdered sugar and you are in for a Southern Experience ala wonderful. I am pretty sure Amazon probably has Community -- the price is lots lower than a lot of fancy coffees but the flavor is addictive.

I happen to like those syrups, especially vanilla or hazelnut, used to get them, so the hub's not wasted. Glad you keep them around the house for guests. If I drop by I will probably enjoy them, since I only get them occasionally for treats.

Your commercial hubs are often amusing too, especially that long one you did on lingerie in order to get "lingerie" in the keywords often enough to stimulate ads. This one's good -- it's a frugality topic as well as a commercial hub. You've got a good plan for these topics.

Thanks Robert! I hope it works out--we'll see! That chicory coffee recipe sounds grand. I still want to see New Orleans. I wish I'd gone before Katrina, but I still want to go anyway. It sounds like the perfect place for someone who loves ghosts and spooky things. Thank you for your encouraging words. I really appreciate it. :)

PG, I love lattes, especially vanilla! Thanks for the recipe now I can save money…I will also check out the Amazon's grocery and gourmet food section as you suggested. I buy all my books from there and love their super saver deal.

Hi Nancy! Me too. I like vanilla flavored coffees too--no sweetener though, just the vanilla smell and taste. :)

Great job Pam! I agree with UW. You were destined to head over to the dark side eventually. I did too... I hope it's profitable for you, and besides -- I like reading ANYTHING that you write!

What about the "special" kind of coffee that is made from beans eaten by some animal or other and picked out of the dung?

LOL! I've heard of that! I can't imagine...it's enough to put be back onto tea. :)

pgrundy... I AM your father... impressive, most impressive.... the ability to hawk wares is insignificant next to the power of the force... the force is strong with you... you now know not to underestimate the power of the force... Emperor Edmondson has foreseen this. It is your destiny. Join me, and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son (daughter?) :)

Believe me, pgrundy, there are days when I want to use the light saber to commit photon seppuku. I once looked at myself in the mirror and saw a fat, balding, bespectacled old fart who at least never crossed the line into mercinary advocation of the mercantile joys of footie pajamas and plastic wine glasses. Now I can no longer even say that! Bwaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...
