We Like to Hike: Useful Hiking Tips for the Happy Camper
Hiking has always been a generally loved pastime and recreation by many campers around the world. What's a great camping experience without the joy and thrill of hiking and getting up close and personal with nature's best, right? Because of the undeniable popularity of hiking, so is the clamour for tips and techniques on how to have a glorious hiking experience that one will never forget.
Here are some useful hiking tips you can use on your next hiking trip:
1. Be sure to pack all the necessary camping gear and hiking equipment you need to ensure you of a safe and comfortable hiking adventure. Just be careful when packing. You must be able to distinguish necessary items from not. A portable CD player for example is nice to bring along but there are far more important things that require a space in your pack like a complete first aid kit.
2. Don't forget to bring a compass, map and the knowledge on how to use these. A GPS is also handy but there's nothing like the traditional map and compass to guide your hike. Also bring a cellular phone which you'll find useful when the need to contact the outside world arise.
3. Bring sufficient supply of food and water. Trail mix and energy bars are excellent snacks that will replenish your lost energy. Be sure to refill your water jug when you pass by clean streams.
4. Plan your hike. Know how many miles you'll have to walk and how long you plan to accomplish the hike. Be sure to set a realistic goal that even the slower hikers in the group will be able to achieve. Include in it the breaks you need to take during the hike.
5. Never hike alone. Hiking is a group sport and it should remain as it is. In hiking you are always faced with the possibilities of experiencing an injury or getting lost so it's important that you have other people to help you in case of these circumstances.
6. Check the weather report before you go hiking.
7. Always keep a keen eye on the trail. This does not mean to say that you shouldn't look elsewhere aside from the ground. But just be careful and don't be too absorbed by the beautiful surroundings that you'll fail to see that there's a hole in front of you.
8. Let the slowest hiker lead the walk and set the pace. A hike is not a race. It should be a leisurely walk. Having the slow hikers at the back increase the chance of them getting lost or left behind.
9. Take breaks to relax and recharge yourself.
10. Apply sunscreen to avoid getting stinging sunburn.
11. Carry matches in film canisters to avoid getting them wet. A fire can keep you warm and dry. Just be sure to put it out completely before leaving.
12. Learn survival skills before you venture into hiking. Ask veteran hikers or research about it on the internet.
Hiking is an adventure that acquaints us with the wonders of nature. With safety and precautions in mind, you can be sure of a hiking experience that you'll always remember.
