Many people are probably wondering if it is alright to buy a used chainsaw, especially if it something that they find at a yard or garage sale. Well, the easy answer is yes, it is alright to buy used - but there are a couple of conditions that need to be met in order for you to ever consider getting a used chainsaw for sale.

The first thing that you are going to need to consider is the depth of your budget. If you can afford to spend lots of money on your saw then you can very easily go with a new chainsaw. But if you have to save some money then you should probably begin your search with a used one.

The only problem with buying used is that you generally inherit another person's mess. If they have failed to maintain their chainsaw properly it is you that suffers the consequences. If they have hit their chainsaw up against something that they shouldn't have it will be you that has to deal with the impact that has on your saw's performance. Buying used is not without its faults.

But there is some sensible tips that you can employ when making your purchase:

  1. Buying from private individuals who are offering their chainsaws at a garage or yard sale on the weekend can be a source of some great finds. You will need to shop around since you are going to find some serious duds too. Another great place to look is on Craiglist - you can find plenty of stuff there. Just be sure to cast your net wide.
  2. Once you find a used chainsaw to take a look at you will want to make sure that the saw is in working order. Ask the current owner to get it going so that you can hear the sound of the motor and get an idea if it can actually start. If it doesn't start you probably want to move on.
  3. If regular yard sales don't deliver you can kick it up a notch and go to farm sales or auctions. You will probably find more people who know how to maintain a chainsaw in this neck of the woods, which can be a really good thing. It also means that the price of the saw is probably going to be a little higher as well.
  4. Still another option is to go to a chainsaw outlet store. You might want to talk to a sales associate and let them know that you are in the market for a used chainsaw. They may have some in stock or might have someone coming in soon to do a trade in. Prices here are generally going to be higher still.
  5. Then, if this still fails, you can go on the World Wide Web and see if anyone is offering to sell a quality used chainsaw. Chances are you will have more options than you can handle, but you will undoubtedly run into one major problem - you can't actually look at any of the saws before purchasing. I would only go online as a last resort.

Finally, when buying your used chainsaw you want to make sure that you know a little bit about the model you are purchasing. A great place to get educated are online forums. There are hundreds of people who know their stuff and are willing to help people by placing the information in an accessible way for all to see. Check it out and get educated before you buy a used chainsaw on sale.
